One of the best parts about this book is that it takes out so much of the mysticism behind Ayurveda. Dr. Svoboda uses a more scientific approach to describing the forces in the body and why Ayurveda makes sense, making Ayurveda much more approachable and practical for so many people.This book has changed the way I see friends and their actions as well as my relationship to so many of the foods/tastes that I eat. If you’re even the slightest bit interested in Ayurveda and how it can be used to heal and balance the body, READ THIS BOOK!
I am just getting "into" ayurvedic and this book was recommended to me. I find it so comfortable to read, just an easygoing flow and I don't get a sensation of DO this, DON'T do that. Well, there are a couple instances of that, but that is because it is related to the principles of ayurvedic doshas - specifics related to advice on how to best get along with your constitutional makeup).This author intrigues me because he is so familiar and kind sounding. I see that he has written many other books, which in reading this one I am excited to order and read. I am a beginner AND this book was recommended to me by an expert, so I think this is a good overall book on the subject of Doshas/Prakriti.I am finding this book to be the perfect complement to my 2 favorite other books I currently have on ayurvedic, "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies" (Vasant Lad), and "Heaven's Banquet" (Miriam Kasin Hospodar), both of which I cannot recommend highly enough. For kind and easygoing diagnosis/treatment recommendations, the first. For recipes and yet again kind and easygoing style, the latter.I am so excited to have this book and so glad I ordered it. A very wonderful book indeed! I am reading it while I am admitted in an Ayurvedic hospital for curing myself of slip disc ailment. The treatment offered in the hospital is exactly as per descriptions in the book. The book has really helped to understand the mindset of my healers. It has also helped me to take charge of my own health choices when my healers are not around.The book is specially commendable for its simplicity in presenting Ayurveda! Dr Svoboda also provides lots of anecdotes from his life which deepens ones understanding of the subject.My perception of health and healing has changed upside down after reading this book. To me Ayurvedic medicinal science seems quite ahead of modern contemporary medicine. It offers such detail understanding of health which modern science does not have any clue and probably may not have a clue in years to come.
Svoboda is brilliant. I heartily recommend his books. I first read this book as an introduction to Ayurveda and appreciated the writing style and depth of material. Now that I study Ayurveda formally, I continue to appreciate Prakriti for Svoboda's unique ways of explaining the subject matter. He gives a subtle spin to the material you won't find in other Ayurveda books. His unique analysis shows great depth and understanding. I guess I am a Svoboda fan ... I have read 4 of his books and found each one to have original insights into the subject matter. Reading his books is almost as if you had a guru explaining things to you - more than just a collection of facts on pages.
I've read several books on ayurveda, done a couple of the self analysis charts and even had an ayurvedic consult but the concepts have remained elusive. I had rejected ayurveda as a system of self knowledge and potential healing for myself. However, when I picked up this book and started to leaf through it I could instantly relate to the descriptions of the doshas, how they express in people, including myself. This is the first book I've come across that spells it out so simply and therefore makes the knowledge applicable. In regards to how food relates to and affects the doshas this book again, quite simply, lays out the information. From the westerners point of view it is a little hard to fully appreciate the aspects of food (taste) and how that affects our doshas but with a little faith you can kind of see how foods do affect us.The book is a quick read, well written to keep you moving through the subjects and understandable.I would recommend this book to someone who wants to learn about ayurveda.
The author understands the subject very well, and gives brief but equally indepth explanations on the subject. Very well written. It almost flows like reading a novel. While most books on ayurveda written by Indian authors offer the same material, they are unfortunately, not so well edited for proper use of English, often describing subjects in a 'transliterated' way instead of a 'translated manner' from the author's original tongue (language/ dialect). This is one of the best explanations on the subject I have read.
This is my first introduction to Ayurvedic healing and I really have enjoyed what the author has released. One complaint I have is that it is a little complicated as an introductory book, but I like that has brevity instead of long-winded-ness. Does a great job introducing the doshas and has a fabulous quiz to see where you fit.
I actually read this book out of pure interest, now it's a part of my Yoga Teacher Training course. If you take the time, its a really interesting read and sold me on the Ayurvedic Dosha concept. You can see the parallels between yourself and the doshas. Helping you understand quite a bit about yourself. Give it a shot, I think you will be please.
