When I listen to a sermon, I ask myself, "Could a Muslim have preached that message?" If the answer is yes, then that means that the preacher probably preached moralism and/or legalism. The premise of this book is that we can avoid these two traps by seeking to find Jesus on every page. I heartily agree with this idea. The author seeks to help the reader in this task by demonstrating how to preach the gospel from the different genres of the OT. Jesus cannot be found on every page by using the exact same approach to every OT passage, so these tips are helpful and insightful. This will be a helpful book for anyone who wants to read the Bible with a focus on Jesus but especially for preachers seeking to help their congregations see that the Bible is all about Jesus.

This book is an accessible summary of the way the Old Testament points to Jesus. Murray notes that there are many connections to draw to Jesus, and attempts to provide a reasonably complete survey of these connections.Murray is basically correct in his approach. He sees Jesus on every page, though not necessarily, it seems, in every verse. That is, every story can be connected to Jesus even if we have to be careful not to press the analogy in every detail. Murray makes a lot of 1 Peter 1:12 (" It was revealed to them [the prophets] that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been reported to you") in arguing that the Old Testament prophets knew about the New Testament era that was coming. The Old Testament "things" is the same as the New Testament "reports".Murray is spot on at many points. For example, he correctly points out, on the basis of Acts 2:30-31, that in Psalm 16 David was a "believing Christian speaking of Christ as his only hope" (p. 194). I also appreciate Murray's alliteration in arranging his subpoints: his chapter on Jesus and Creation has the headings "The Arrangement of Redemption," "The Arena of Redemption," "The Aim of Redemption," "The Accessories of Redemption," "The Assistants of Redemption," "The Advance of Redemption," "The Analogy of Redemption," "The Advantages of Redemption," "The Apex of Redemption," "The Author of Redemption," and "The Application of Redemption".There are, however, numerous points at which I disagree with Murray, either because he makes a dubious assertion or because he omits a critical point. I will restrict myself to three examples.Firstly, Murray tends to see Jesus as doing everything in the Old Testament. For example, he argues that "the Son of God is the usual way God appears to humanity" (p. 76). Yet this has the effect of diminishing the work of the Holy Spirit. If we are going to apportion divine deeds among the different members of the Trinity (and that in itself is fraught with peril), then many Old Testament acts must be seen as the work of the Spirit (e.g. Nehemiah 9:20).Secondly, in looking at Jesus in the prophetic books, Murray omits the idea that Jesus is the one on whom the judgement falls. He talks about Jesus being the judge of the nations (p. 128) but we can also look at judgement the other way: when Nahum 1:2 says "The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful", we have to remember that this wrath against sin fell on Jesus. This is a glaring omission in what attempts to be a complete catalogue of connections between the Old and New Testaments.Thirdly, in talking about covenant signs, Murray claims that "the crown on David's head reminded him and all Israel of God's promise of an everlasting king and kingdom" (p. 167). There is, however, no reference to David being crowned until he obtains the crown of the King of Rabbah in 2 Samuel 12:30. David was anointed with oil (2 Samuel 2:4) but the crown is not itself a Davidic symbol. It is used in the Psalms (89:39 and 132:18) to refer to the later monarchy, and perhaps this is where Murray gets the idea.Thus, Jesus on Every Page is a rather annoying book. It is helpful in many ways, but it could have been so much better. The numerous points of disagreement I had prevent me from recommending it wholeheartedly.

Jesus on Every Page by David Murray is a refreshing book that helped me to find ways to apply many sections of the Old Testament to my life. As the title expresses, David Murray believes that every page of the Bible (including the Old Testament!) is meant to reveal Christ.The book begins by justifying the task of seeking Jesus in the Old Testament. There are 4 chapters devoted to validating this pursuit from the words of Jesus, Paul, John, and Peter. I was staggered by how many New Testament scriptures emphasize that the gospel of Jesus is the main message of the Old Testament. For example, After his resurrection Jesus taught two of his followers how all of the Old Testament was about him:"And he said to them, 'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?' And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself." - Luke 24:25-27Jesus also rebukes the Pharisees for not seeing the gospel of Jesus in the Old Testament:"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.... For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?" - John 5:39-40, 46-47These early chapters even include discussions of the sections of scripture that seem to be negative about the Old Testament, which I found especially helpful. Here is a sample:"There's no question that in parts of Gal. 3-4, Paul seemed to view the Old Testament, especially the Old Testament law, in a very negative light. As I read these chapters more closely, however, I began to see Paul making a distinction between the Old Testament rightly understood and the Old Testament as warped and perverted by Judaizing legalists...the Galatians had been delivered from the bondage of trying to get to heaven by obeying the Ten Commandments and following the ceremonial law. Paul preached a Jesus who had obeyed the moral law for sinners, a Jesus who had suffered the penalty of a law broken by sinners, and a Jesus who had abolished the rituals and ceremonies by fulfilling them." - Jesus on Every PageAfter proving the validity of seeking Jesus on Every Page of the Bible, the rest of the book discusses methods to find Jesus in ten different sections of the Old Testament. To be honest, I did not get a lot out of some sections. At some points, Murray is extremely brief, and some of his methods are reduced down to a single sentence or two. This made certain sections of the book a little boring.However, there were many sections that I found really helpful. The sections on the Law and the Proverbs really helped me to connect those sections of the Bible to my faith in Christ. Also, the section on covenants in the Old Testament was a good refresher for me. It is really encouraging to see the consistency in God's promise for redemption from Gen. 3 all the way through the Bible.Jesus on Every Page was definitely worth reading. Every Christian who struggles with applying the Old Testament to their life should get this book. David Murray uses a very down to earth, conversational writing style, which makes the book a very easy read. Even if you are not an avid reader, I think that you would enjoy this book.

But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

The Heart Sutra is the essence of the Perfection of Wisdom class of sutras, which represent the "Second Turning of the Wheel of Dharma". That is to say, the second main set of teachings by the Buddha. The First Turning was on the Four Noble Truths. The Third Turning was on Buddha Nature. But the Second Turning was on the nature of reality, emptiness -- in other words, the important stuff!This is a hard literature, crystalized in the Heart Sutra, which is only a few pages but very dense (versions of it are available on-line). Here the Dalai Lama provides an excellent commentary on this difficult text by placing it within its entire Buddhist context. The result is that one is led step by step to the deepest understanding of this sutra, which is really the most profound element of the Buddha's teaching. Remarkably, then, this book can be grasped by the beginning student as well as much more experienced students. A crucial element in Buddhism is familiarization: going back over something again and again until it is understood very deeply, and then realized personally through meditation. ***SPOLER ALERT*** This is the first book that I didn't find any amusing situations that made me laugh. The book does not read as though it was written by the same author as the previous books. This book reads and feels different. The language, syntax, everything just felt off. I noticed a FTA name and several other names reused, which seemed odd to me. Her apt was safe, no blown up cars, funeral viewings or help from Grandma. Was she on vacation during this book? The interaction with Grandma and The Plums is always enjoyable. So tired of the Joe and Ranger fight. Enough already, pick one and move on. Joe never buys her things, yet she always turns to Ranger for cars, help with a FTA and to hide out. But, she is supposed to be engaged to be engaged with Joe. She never has bullets for her gun and is usually kidnapped by someone. After 25 books, she has grown very little. Stephanie and Lula are like part of the three stooges, it was funny for a while, and now has become boring and stale. My final Plum novel.

You know, I do like Stephanie and her friends, but I have to say the last 2 books are not near as good as the first 23. This book was humorous, but didn't have any of the laugh out loud parts like in the previous books. I used to get at least 2 good belly laughs out of each book, but not from the last two. I would love more of Grandma Mazur in the books. I am kind of bored with the Stephanie, Joe and Ranger triangle. Stephanie is old enough to make a man decision! Personally, I think she should get together with Ranger! Joe is kind of boring and taking advantage of Ranger, he wants Ranger to protect Stephanie, but not have anything personal going on between Stephanie and Ranger! Ranger really has a soft spot for Stephanie and, I hate to say it , but she uses him, she keeps getting cars and help from him and just seems kind of 'Ranger will fix it all, and pick up my FTAs and let me have the money'. This book was amusing, but at he same time kind of ho hum!

Although this is the 25th book in a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone. At least if was a fun read for me. The bad news? I’m going to have to shell out quite a few bucks for the first 25.I feel as though Stephanie Plum and Lula are neighbors of mine here in North Dakota. They feel like friends my wife and I have.BLUSH FACTOR: There is some trash talk, but, for the most part, nothing too severe. However, there are eff-words – precisely two, if it matters to you. The first is found on page 155 and the second on page 285. Honestly, though, I would not like to see anybody pass this book by simply for these two slips of the tongue. This is THAT fun and engaging.CHARACTER: All of the central characters are well-drawn, and with just enough quirks to keep them authentic and interesting.POV: First person.EXCERPT:This excerpt is provided so readers can get a feel for the writing and their quirky behaviors.'... “Maybe we can help you,” Lula said.“What are you thinking about?”“Killing myself.”“There’s lots of decisions associated with that,” Lula said. “I assume you’re gonna shoot yourself in the head.”“Yeah,” Kulicki said.“Well, your head will most likely explode and make a big mess when you shoot yourself, so best to do it in the bathroom or kitchen. And then are you going to leave a note? And you’ll probably poop your pants so you gotta decide if boxers are the best choice or do you want to be wearing something more sturdy?”“Mostly I was just thinking if I should do it,” Kulicki said.“I’d advise against it,” Lula said. “It’s not something you can change your mind on after you do it. And suppose the bullet doesn’t go in exactly right and you turn yourself into an unsightly vegetable?”Kulicki nodded. “That’s a concern.”“You bet your [expletive deleted],” Lula said. “Why do you want to kill yourself?”“To begin with, I’m going to jail.”“It might not be so bad,” Lula said. “I know lots of people in jail, and they’re doing okay. This series seems to have lost its mojo. What used to be hilarious has become tedious. Number 25 is not funny and that was the thing that I loved about this series. There were always laughs to be had - big belly laughs while I was reading in bed at night. Not anymore apparently. I suspect that the last two books - 24 and 25 - were ghost written. The continuity in some of the characters has changed. Lula is called fat twice and "large" once. Everyone knows that when Lula is called fat she goes crazy on the person making the remark. Not so in this book. She only gets mildly irritated when called a large woman. She doesn't even react when called fat twice. Now that's just not Lula. And, since book 24, Stephanie - who rarely uses obscenities - is using the world "dick" and other colorful phrases. Now, I don't object to cursing in books, I'm no prude. But, it's usually the characters around Stephanie who are using colorful language rather than Stephanie herself. There has been a definite increase in obscenities from all characters starting with book 24 and continuing with 25. Perhaps in an attempt to make the series seem edgier? And, how long is Stephanie going to vacillate between Ranger and Morelli? The decades long teasing of her bouncing back and forth between these two men has gotten stale. The whole book feels stale. The plot does pick up the pace about 60% into the story, but the laughs are nowhere to be found. Sigh. This is not what I expect from Evanovich. Really, what happened to this series???

This is one of the worst book yet! If her work keeps this quality i will not be buying any more

Good photography excellent model with choice of pose. Good job

Drawing the body is a real task and using these models has made it easier because the photos revolve and allows you to see the definition of just about every part. A novel way to provide the use of a model and in my case as just a beginner it is simply easier to follow because you see the whole picture, not just a one dimensional frame.
