The dialogue lacks spark or the flavor of historical authenticity, overly formal and often clunky. That said, I believe Turano fills a unique niche within the historical fiction market, bringing humor and a contemporary sensibility to her writing that possesses great potential, leaving me curious to sample Turano's full-length fiction. The first book in the Apart From the Crowd series, Behind the Scenes, releases in April, and follows the budding romance introduced here between Wilhelmina's fellow wallflower, Permilia Griswold, and department store owner Asher Rutherford. I really enjoyed Permilia's character, and her spark-filled introduction to Asher reminded me of Mr. Selfridge -- so I am already invested in their story. At Your Request was the perfect introduction (at long last!) to Turano's lite historical romantic comedies. While not without issues, I enjoyed this sample and am curious to see how Turano's humor and heart translate to a full-length work.

I like Turano's historical romance novels because the humor comes from funny situations rather than laughing at the stupidity of the characters. This short story was a fail for me in that regard: Wilhelmina is an adult, not-slim woman. Yet she tries to hide under a chair at a dance and gets stuck. I couldn't imagine why any sane woman would think this would work and promptly lost all respect for her.Then the hero--while promising he'd never put the heroine in a compromising position--promptly puts her in a compromising position. So he also promptly lost my respect.The story did get better after that, back to what I'd expect from Turano. The hero did some very nice things for the heroine. Also, this story made me very interested in reading Miss Permilia Griswold's story.There was no sex or bad language. I wouldn't recommend this as your first Jen Turano read, but I'd still recommend it to her fans as it introduces the characters in the "Apart from the Crowd" series.

Jen Turano is one of my favorite authors, she writes books with humor that keeps her readers entertained!At Your Request is the prequel to Turano's new series Apart From the Crowd. This book introduced us to Wilhelmina and .EdgarWilhelmina Radcliff is a feisty woman and the beautiful cover model definitely shows this character well! She's regulated to the wallflower section because her father lost his fortune.Edgar Wannamaker returns to New York after being away for seven year. He is Wilhelmina dearest friend but more. He returns for one thing. Wilhelmina. Both of discover they love each other.Edgar investigates Wilhelmina's loss of family fortune. What he discovers could change everything!This story made me laugh so hard. Jen is an expert at weaving her stories so you have humor, truth, love, and a lessen all weaved together! Beautifully done! I cannot wait for Behind the Scenes!

I have read the other short story “Gentleman of her Dreams” by this author before and quite enjoyed it, and since this was another free short story I had to read this one as well. This is a nice lead in for a new series, I liked the characters and how they found each other again. It's just a very sweet and clean romance story. The last third or so is a sample from “Behind the Scenes” the first new book in this series coming out in April, and that does look like a really good read so I'm definitely going to be reading that when it comes out. Overall this is a great story, worth the read if you're looking for a shorter historical romance, and I'm looking forward to reading more of this authors books in the future.

I'm a speech language pathologist and wanting to read some books to my students for Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month. This book is a good introduction to neurotypical kids about what autism may look like in a peer, and overall it's pretty positive from the point of view of Matt's neurotypical friend. I'd say this book is more focused on awareness than acceptance. I do think it paints ASD in a more "normal" light than many books out there, and focuses on inclusion. In the story, the friend gives examples of things that Matt (the child with ASD) struggles with and then follows up with how the narrator helps him continue on with the activity. I'm just crossing my fingers to find a book out there with this same idea but from the point of view of the child with autism!

I am not a fan of most books about autism on the market these days but my librarian mother suggested I get this book. I got two. One for the school library and one for home to lend to the families of school friends.Although this is written from the perspective of a friend and that friends name is never identified, the other character with autism is. I believe it’s positive and practical and a great tool for both my children to learn how to be solution oriented when a friend is doing something they don’t understand or they find annoying. It creates understanding, and tools for kids to use to think out of the box! I highly recommend this book!

I really like this book. it's about a boy who is autistic and how his friend adapts to some of the quirks autistic children sometimes exhibit. and how it's ok. I bought it so that my son's teacher could read it to his kindergarten class. because they're in kindergarten i didn't want the word "AUTISM" to turn into something demeaning, (so, although it is well written and I like the idea behind it), I took the liberty of applying some low-tack tape to cover some words and lines that I thought might give children ideas on how to single out, make fun of or choose to marginalize my son or other children who just didn't fit the typical child frame. not taking anything away from the author, but I think it worked out well. I would still recommend this book and leave it up to parents to decide how they want to present it.

I have been looking for a good book to explain Autism. I like this book because it explains it in a very relatable way. It worked well for us because the little boy in the story seems to be pretty high functioning and it related well to our situation. It is not perfect, but it was the best I have found for our situation. The kids seem to enjoy reading it also.

I bought this book to donate to my son's class and it was perfect. A great book for classmates to read and get a better understanding of their autistic peer.

Got this for my three year old and we both love it. It's very sweet and has sparked a lot of conversation about being a good friend, and about everyone learning to do things at their own pace. I've even seen him use what he's learned from the story in his interactions at daycare.

For anyone attempt an anaesthetic primary examination, Stoelting is a mandatory resource for pharmacology.It is an unfortunate reality that all pharmacology texts disagree with one another in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. At least in Australia, Stoelting is taken to be the examination reference. It also thus plays the role of a de facto syllabus: material in Stoelting is much more likely to be examined, and material not covered in Stoelting less so.For this reason, it is indispensible for exam candidates and I would strongly advocate having your own copy. In the end, it is a worthwhile investment given the amount of flesh you already have on the line.However, I offer two significant points of caution:(a) DO NOT buy the "mini" Stoelting (Handbook of Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice). It does not have the detailed information required for the exam. I started with the "mini" Handbook but, thankfully, realised that it was not up to par and bought the full text in time to prepare.(b) IGNORE the physiology section of the text. It is useless. I think of Stoelting exclusively as a pharmacology text, and seek better resources for physiology (Brandis' excellent private publication "The Physiology Viva"... do an Internet search for it; Principles of Physiology for the Anaesthetist, Second edition; and Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 24th Edition (LANGE Basic Science))I've only given Stoelting 3 stars, in spite of its being indispensible, because it isn't always logical in its layout. It is also 5-10 years behind current practice and tends to over-emphasise what was state of the art in 1995. However, that is probably a flaw intrinsic to all textbooks. I would also have liked it to be more clinical / practical in its approach.I definitely recommend you buy it, though. And best of luck.

This is a great resource for anesthesia providers. I recommend it whether it's a required text or just something you might want to have in your library.

I would give it 1-star had the Physiology section not been as good as it is. However, the Pharmacology section is extremely out-dated. In fact, most citations come from the late 1980s, early 90s. For a book published in 2005, that is unacceptable.... especially in a content area that evolves so quickly. I find it hard to believe that this information was even up-to-date in 2005.I find myself starting to read a chapter, such as the antibiotics chapter, and stopping after just one page due to the inaccurate information they are presenting. For learning pharmacology, anesthesia or non anesthesia-related, I would stick to other, more accurate books: Goodman & Gilman's, Miller's Anesthesia.In terms of Physiology, this book does an excellent job. However, this book intends to cover both topics. Unfortunately, it only gets half the job done.

Eric Elnes (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) is a pastor, speaker, and media host. He is the author of The Phoenix Affirmations: A New Vision for the Future of Christianity and Igniting Worship: The Seven Deadly Sins. His book Asphalt Jesus: Finding a New Christian Faith on the Highways of America was the result of his 2,500-mile walk from Phoenix to Washington, DC, that promoted awareness of progressive/emerging Christian faith and inspired a feature-length film called The Asphalt Gospel. Even though I have not been a religious person since I was a young boy, when I did not yet learn how to question those who promote religious dogma; nevertheless, I sometimes read books with a spiritual message just for amusement.When I first read the promo on this book I thought it might be an interesting read. Unfortunately, this book did not meet my expectations. I guess I was seeking a more objective and scientific approach to the topic, but I now realize to appreciate this writer’s approach you have to already believe in God and preferably be a Christian. Fortunately, I do not fall into the category of a “believer” in the mystical; nevertheless, I did find some of the material somewhat interesting but not enlightening.This book is organized into nine subject areas and includes the following: Where do we find ourselves, the gift of uncertainty, the gift of emptiness, the gift of being thunderstruck, the gift of getting lost, the gift of temptation, the gift of disappearing, the gift of misfits and where to we go from here.I have to admit that the author is an excellent writer and the points he brings up as to where all of us find ourselves at various times in our lives is true; however, his approach is pure Christian theology which is fine for those who believe in a supreme being, but many books on Zen and other Asian philosophies can also meet the spiritual needs of those who find themselves in “the dark wood” without believing in a deity.Rating: 4 Stars. Our pastor used this for her Lenten sermons and our Lenten discussion group. The author NOT saying that bad times are God's will, but "We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (RSV). If we pay attention, we will find the gfits that those times bring to us. Thoughtful and thought provoking. Honest. Occasionally lost me when it was in too deep theological waters, but a worthwhile read.

How many of us have wandered through the dark woods of life...forgetting there are gifts to be used, wisdom to be gained and deep spiritual growth to be found ? Eric Elnes writes eloquently of his years of experience with his churches and of his personal soul path, sharing a language that we all need to hear, to awaken to...we are not alone in the journey. There are blessings in the struggle, in the conscious path of widening the narrow places within us and gifts that Spirit continues to surprise us with. As a Spiritual Director I highly recommend this book to all who walk the path of healing and transformation, of beauty and whole heartedness.

This was an excellent book. The exploration of the Dark Woods and it’s importance in our lives is not really a new idea to me as I write poetry mostly exploring nature’s way of teaching us within the woods whether it be Dark or light or life. But He introduces new ways of perceiving the Dark Woods in his gentle and touching way. If you seek a deeper relationship with God and a book that will walk with you in that experience, this is a wonderful book to do that. I thank God for this man speaks from his soul.

The author uses the metaphor of being in a dark wood spiritually. Rather than seeing this as a curse, he challenges us to see the dark moments of our life as the times when we can most be close to God and our truest selves. What a wonderful book!

When I was a late teenager one of books that changed my life and deepened my understanding of the spiritual life between people and God was Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster. Gifts of the Dark Wood hits even closer to center of the true nature of the relationship between people and God. The power of intuition as a guiding force from God, the understanding of the true church of misfits, the history of the development of the easy ale house of common acceptance and detriment of the significance of the church, and the acceptance of struggle and shortcomings as gifts that God can use in us hit the nail right on the head! This book cuts right to the heart and fills the soul with hope and joy in knowing ourselves more fully and being available to the Holy Spirit.

We used this for our Lenten series at my church. I liked it so much I keep buying copies and giving them to my friends and family. Elnes gives a whole different perspective on human suffering and the reasons for it! A must read if one is going through rough times. (And all of us do at one time or another in our lives!)

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but I've liked Dr. Elnes work so I thought I'd get it. I was not let down! His words created a longing on my part to go deeper inside my world and find greater meaning within and from those "dark" places of life and come out on the other side, still in one piece. Highly recommended.

For believers who still have doubts., this book is a thought provoking read. It is well written and gives one many thoughts to ponder.
