I've read so many books on NDEs, I wonder sometimes if I should just keep going. I've read individual accounts, I've read collections of NDEs. This book goes a step beyond many others in that it's much more than just a collection of NDEs. I don't know why I assumed an NDE researcher wouldn't be a good author, but Ken Ring is an excellent author. The book is all about the lessons of NDEs as Ken's goal is to spread the "benign virus" of the NDE to us without us having to have had an NDE.The NDE accounts are organized to give us the lessons each chapter presents. I believe the reason people experience NDEs and are sent back is to give us lessons, hints as to how we can live better lives and better prepare for where we will all go one day.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I'm going to purchase the previous book he wrote on the subject, now.

If you haven't read Kenneth's other books, would say look into his books more thoroughly and don't buy this one first. Pretty good book if you've read at least one of his others documenting the now-many-thousands of Near Death (and clinical death then revived) Experiencers (NDE) and the wonders of those very similar stories. The first one is about the NDE experiences themselves. Another of his books is very technical about all the studies done by him and his team to verify the viability of the phenomenon of NDE's. Read that one first, I'd say. This book is about 'What the NDE'ers bring, and then live out, from 'the other side' can benefit the lives of those (of us) who haven't had such an experience.'I'm been enjoying this book but really, it doesn't translate after a certain point. To find yourself intuitively convinced and reasonably certain that these experiences of the NDE'ers are real is to get a glimpse of many factors that can make life easier (reduces the fear of death and God completely, reduces guilt from the past and encourages the endeavor to share and cultivate altruistic and heartfelt love in your life as primary) there still is an unbridgeable gap (I feel) between the profundity of those life-changing experiences and what we who have not had such an experience can actually live. What they speak of having experienced in that other 'realm' is very much what the enlightened Masters speak of (to a point or in full, depending on the Master). Those Masters who attain that total transcendence on Earth, as we know, are very rare. The NDE'ers carry much of that radiance and freedom with them here that they were shown in that other dimension, now manifest in transformed way of relating on Earth. It's very inspiring and I must say that their stories have changed this life as well.The book brings a possibility and perspective for living in a new acceptance, love and harmony in this earthly life, inspired by stories of what the NDE learning experience has shown and instilled into the NDE'ers, which changed in them in such a way they are now living in these meta-human ways. He spends time with each of these altruistic qualities as an inspiration to begin living more this way. With a few NDE stories for reference, that is what this book is about.

I have been reading these NDE books since Moody's and Kubler-Ross's books came out. Whenever I want to get encouragement, I read these books. It has made me a very loving person. Also, I believe I have found my purpose in life. When I get stressed about the challenge I just ask God to show me what to do and God always comes through. I have found peace in my life!

The notion behind this book is that those of us who have NOT experienced a near-death experience have much to learn, and put into practice, from those who have. This is written by a college professor, and it lives somewhere between what you'd expect from an academic and what you'd expect from a book aimed at millions of people.And, of course, what I liked best was the accounts of the experiences that people had. The big take-away for me was the full life review. If this is accurate, the good news is, existence goes on. The bad news is, we're all going to find out exactly how what we did affected everybody around us. I just cringe, looking back on so much of how I've behaved in my life. Itreally does make me think it might be time to clean up my act.It's hard to believe for me, though. Mostly, I think that once we die, that's the end of us. But, there's reason to think that just might not be the case.

I feel I'm not qualified to review this book. I'm just a regular guy, not a literature professor, but maybe my comments will be helpful to some. This book is really good. It's all about the characters. Many times while I was reading I wondered how all of this was going to end. It wasn't like a regular story where there's a pretty clear end goal, like get the bad guy, or solve the mystery. It was more like things are just happening and I wonder what's going to happen next. I thought maybe it's just going to stop abruptly, as if Tolstoy would just suddenly be done writing about all these characters, but it really did have a solid ending to conclude everything. Thinking back on the story I remember many ups and downs and tense moments and light hearted moments, it was very enjoyable and pretty easy to read.One thing that really amazed me was how well Tolstoy could switch between different characters and settings. Everyone had distinct personalities and the way they were all portrayed was with so much compassion and understanding that as a reader I could really see parts of myself in everyone. There was no one character that I related to more than any other. I was able to relate to every single one of them differently. I believe this is the reason Tolstoy is considered a master.The pace of the book is a little slow for me because I'm a slow reader, but in retrospect I feel like the pace was actually pretty good and it only felt slow because I had absolutely no idea where the story was going. Every chapter had something new happening and the story just strolled right along. Probably like riding a tractor for 50 miles. You've got plenty of time to look at all the flowers and clouds and barns and animals along the way, it takes forever, but it never stops moving.It helped a lot to have this book on my kindle because towards the end there was more and more french that was easy to translate with the kindle. The port to the kindle was perfect. I saw no strange spacing or oddly misspelled words.Overall I recommend giving this book a shot. Don't be discouraged by the length. I realize a reader may feel compelled to read this particular book just so they can say that they did. It's got that trophy book status. I feel like that's a bad thing though. If you find yourself a few hundred pages in and are interested in what's going on, then keep going. If however after a few hundred pages you feel like it's a chore to read, then don't bother, it's not going to suddenly become more interesting after any point in the book. It's very consistent, you can trust this author and the translation, the ending won't let you down, there will be no long lulls. What you get in the beginning is what you get through the entire book, it's very steady and very high quality writing.

I have never enjoyed a book more than this one. From beginning to end, every part, every sentence, every word. It was surprisingly easy to read as well, although I suppose some credit should go to the translator for that aspect. The Russian names are a bit tricky, of course, i usually said them out loud to try and get them down. Actually I read most of the book aloud, just to slow me down and make sure I didn't miss anything, plus it sounds so good hearing the elegance of his writing. As a matter of fact, when I heard that they made this into a movie, my idea of the best way to appreciate this book in a movie was to have a microphone, a chair and and excellent reader just reading the words into the camera. Nothing else, because you don't NEED anything else. If you looking for a thrilling story line with lots of twists and unexpected turns, this is probably not the book for you. I mean it's an interesting enough story, but it's involves things that happen all the time to ordinary people. What's so enjoyable is the way he DESCRIBES what's going on in each scene, each conversation, the thoughts and emotions of the characters as they deal with whatever unfolds in their lives. Especially I like he way he jumps around in his descriptions, what's going through her mind, what she says, what's her body language, what he sees, what he thinks, how it affects him, descriptions of the little physical clues to their feelings. He's moving around from character to character, from dialogue to thoughts to physical descriptions, and as you read, all of a sudden YOU'RE THERE! Actually you're more than there, because you see it from many different perspectives, and you just know exactly what they're feeling, thinking. It's really breathtaking is the best way to describe it as he's moving you around the scene seeing both the surface and deep into the character's thoughts and feelings. He even gets into the mind of the damn hunting dog, and after I got done rolling on the floor with laughter I got up and said "YES, YES, that's exactly how they think!" This was my first Russian novel (other that something on Crime and Punishment years ago that I never finished and can't really recall) but it won't be my last, I'll read this again at least once, then will explore whatever else is out there. In fact the only down side to reading this book is that it may have ruined me for less compelling writers. Charles Dickens has always been one of my favorite writers, but I can't seem to get through David Copperfield all of a sudden...maybe happy people ARE all pretty much the same.

Levin wants to be honest, yet social. Private, yet open. He's such a glorious mixed up man, at his best when harvesting wheat with his peasant brothers.Anna feels wooden to me. She is conflicted, does impulsive destructive things--giving into Vronsky--without any evidence that she's considered the effect on her and on her son. If you want to read an authentic voice of feminine angst, read Alice Munroe.Even with wooden Anna, this book was worth the effort for me. Written 1875-1877, the time the Impressionists were shaking up the Paris salons, it is a novel of ideas. It asks, what about the old way of life is worth saving? What should be thrown out?It does showt that living in a patriarchy is difficult for many women. Conversely, rich men are unaware that they have a tailwind making their lives so much easier.

This is much more than a novel, it is a view into 19th century Russian society from top to bottom. We see the lives and work of peasants, the intellectual struggles of the well-informed, and the financial challenges facing wealthy city-dwellers and landed gentry. It all becomes very personal and three-dimensional. You see what people say, what people really mean, and how it is interpreted by others. The story of Anna Karenina is actually not a summary of the book, but only a part of a larger tapestry.

Lilian Hoban is a wonderful kids writer. We own every one of her Arthur books and they are worth reading over and over. These are very easy to read books for most kids age 5 and up. We started out reading them at age 4 and moved up year after year through each book. Very interesting stories with a lesson to learn in each book. Just love Arthur books.

On the second page of this book, one of the kids talks about her sister's birthday party, where they had a bathing suit modeling contest. The hell?

My kids and now my grandkids all love Arthurs' adventures. They are timeless.There are always lessons learned throughout the story.

The main character, Arthur, decides to have a gymnastics contest at his birthday party. He announces to his friends that he will win the award for the best all-around gymnast, and repeatedly tells them that he is better at gymnastics than they are. Then he spends his party sulking because they can do gymnastics well also. His friends then decide to give him the award for best all-around gymnast.

This book was suggested to me by my faculty mentor as a resource for my research into establishing an NGO as part of Masterâ€™s Degree in Ministry Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Tabor College. The concept of social entrepreneurship was new nomenclature for me but one that Iâ€™ve connected with deeply as a result of my time with this book. It is clear to me that the nonprofit sector can glean practical insights from the dozens of stories of real people, making real impact, both here in the United States and in the most impoverished places around our globe.I highly recommend this book if for no other reason than the encouragement it gives for all of us who are striving to make the most of the philanthropic resources at our disposal. Social entrepreneurs are a relatively new breed in their field but their numbers are growing larger and their influence growing stronger each year. How to Change the World features the stories of several successful social entrepreneurs with personal stories that detail the challenges and many obstacles placed in their paths each day as the struggled to make the world a better place. Many of these entrepreneurs were considering a career that including the owning/operating of their own business enterprise. But instead of going for the money, these individuals chose a different path. They felt a life calling that was more directly associated with the improvement of individual lives and they accepted and embraced this challenge even though they could have made a much better living as a business entrepreneur.This book includes more than twenty different stories of personal sacrifice and courage and most all of the stories are inspiring and memorable. The range of social activism is pretty wide in this book, even though improving health seems to be one of the primary concerns of a large percentage of these social entrepreneurs. Whether the cause is direct, like providing immunizations against polio, or indirect and ongoing, like educating cultures about the importance of sanitary conditions, each of the stories offered in this book is unique in its own way and its methods and successes vary from one entrepreneur and one location to the next. Some of the stories are very positive and have been very successful, almost from the start. Others have been more frustrating for the parties involved and have required greater patience and strategy to achieve desired results.Bill Drayton is the founder of Ashoka and he speaks at many points throughout the book. Drayton's Ashoka organization is responsible for the continued financial and moral support of many of the social entrepreneurs presented in this book and if I'm not mistaken, all of the success stories presented in How to Change the World include individuals who are members of Ashoka. This association of social entrepreneurs has strict guidelines and only the most dedicated individuals to their respective causes are selected to become Ashoka fellows. At present, Ashoka has grown to more than two thousand fellows in more than sixty nations around the world and it continues to grow in influence as the profession of social entrepreneurialism continues to grow and thrive.If there is any small criticism to make with How to Change the World, it would be the fact that it doesn't directly explain how to change the world. When I first heard of this book, I assumed it was going to be a book about social activism and the necessary steps needed to get licensed, jump the regulation hurdles, etc. to become a social entrepreneur. Instead, this is a book about success stories. There is no direct explanation on what to do if one decides to become a social entrepreneur. The actions of the leaders in each story are meant to serve as inspiration and as an example of what steps to take. Also, it would be nice if the book included more statistical facts to illustrate the success stories. I fully believe what the book says, but having more numeric illustrations, graphs, tables, etc., would enhance this book.Overall, How to Change the World is a very good book about the difference that a few hard- working and determined individuals can make when they decide to take up an important cause and press forward with their dreams for social change. The stories the book presents are inspiring in their own unique ways and they illustrate the difficulties, challenges, frustrations, and triumphs that one can experience when they decide to take on the role of a social entrepreneur.

I ordered this book for a public health class in college. It's got inspiring stories of social entrepreneurs-- each chapter is dedicated to a different cause/person behind the cause. It's a little dry unless you're really into the material (wanting inspiration as an entrepreneur yourself)-- each chapter is an account of an entrepreneur but it's not always super personal.
