Lovecraft and Dr. Seuss: Match made in R'lyeh!

Why are there not more people buying this book!!! If you let your kids read goosebumps or any of you like lit. on the darker or more macob side of the literary spectrum you will rilly apresheate this. Plus its enjoyable for a much border age spectrum, my 2 year old loves it, my 7 year old, my 12 year old, and myself! The poetic flow is emencly satisfying, its wimsicle, scary, misterious, engaging, not to long, not to short, has beautiful Seussian Ilistrations to ogal as we move from one page to the next, and is so much fun to read aloud.

The story and artwork are fantastic, a great homage to both Lovecraft and Seuss.Unfortunately, the copy I received had several loose pages that were not bound correctly. I had saved the book as a gift and now it's too late to return it, so be sure to check the pages as soon as you get it.

This book does the following nearly perfectly:1. Summarize "The Call of Cthulu" as a story.2. Imitate the drawing style of Dr. Suess.3. Imitate the writing style of Dr. Sues.Since I like both Lovecraft and Dr. Suess, it is very amusing to see both in the same work.

I look forward to sharing this with my children if I have any. I feel the themes associated with Lovecraft's work that may not be appropriate for young readers (you know the ones) are handled effectively here. In terms of presentation: the text is a concise retelling of the CoC story, and the artwork is exceptionally faithful to the Seuss style of children's books. I would recommend for parents, young readers and fans of the Mythos.

A well written story that really captures the spirit of Seuss. Well illustrated and a fun read. A bit dark in parts (No... really?) but certainly PG-13 with its ideas. Give it to a kid who is "too old for this kind of book" and see what they say after the part with the cultists....

Great Artistry, and Poetic Rhythm. Very well done.

AWESOME!!! The Whole family Loves it!!! Our kids took it with us to a GWAR show and got it signed by them, Ringworm, Hatebreed, and Miss May I!! ALL Bands thought the book was Bad*** and we’re happy to sign it

Review

CBA bestsellerECPA bestsellerPraise for Do Hard Things“Do Hard Things is an extraordinary book. In fact, I believe it will prove to be one of the most life-changing, family-changing, church-changing, and culture-changing books of this generation. I'd love for every teenager to read this book, but I'm just as eager for every parent, church leader, and educator to read it.” – Randy Alcorn, best-selling author of Heaven and The Treasure Principle“This book is one I would recommend to any of my friends, teen or not. If it doesn't help you, you are lying.”– Carter B., age 14, North Carolina“Do Hard Things is so important. It is challenging teenagers to rebel against the low expectations placed on them. And the voices that are asking teens to rise to meet this challenge are voices from their own generation. That thrills me.” – Chuck Colson, bestselling author of How Now Shall We Live?“I love the way it is written. It is crystal clear, to the point, interesting, funny, challenging, encouraging, and an easy read.”– Lisa R., age 15, Australia“Adult expectations for youth are too low. And these twins are out to raise them. Don't adapt to the low cultural expectations for youth. Set high ones. Youth can become examples for adults. Think that way. Dream that way. Or as the Harris brothers would say, ‘Rebel against low expectations.’” – John Piper, bestselling author of Don’t Waste Your Life“The message of Do Hard Things is going to awaken the dreams and passions of thousands of young people all over the world. How do I know this? This radical, yet relatively simple idea, has changed my life.”– Erika H., age 18, Michigan“In a culture where laziness and ease is often the order of the day for teenagers, Do Hard Things presents a radical and provocative alternative. I heartily recommend this book.”– R. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary“This book has totally changed the way I think. I recommend it to any and every teen who has a desire to turn their life around and make a difference.”– Ashley W., age 13, Georgia“Alex and Brett capture the passion and potential of our generation perfectly in this book. In Do Hard Thingsthey encourage us to go above and beyond the status quo in everything from schoolwork to serving the poor. This is a truly unique and sorely needed book.”– Zach Hunter, author of Be the Change and Generation Change“This book is amazing. It changes your whole way of thinking. I believe that every single teen needs to buy a copy of this book. Thanks, Alex and Brett for challenging us!”– Stacie L., age 15, Kentucky“This is an important book. And not just for those wanting to launch successfully into adulthood, but also for discontent twenty- and thirty-somethings who long to be catapulted into significance.”– Ted Slater, editor of Boundless, Focus on the Family“I'm not exactly a teenager anymore. But as I was reading I began to see how this can apply to anyone. It's never too late to start. I absolutely cannot wait to suggest this book to the 'kidults' in my life.”– Matt R., age 26, Georgia“Alex and Brett are the real deal and Do Hard Things is a real wake up call, not just for young people, but for all God's people. I can't recommend it highly enough.”– Shannon Ethridge, bestselling author of the Every Woman's Battle series“This book is a wake up call to a generation that is down in the dumps. It's like a coach screaming from the sidelines, ‘You can do it!!!’. I'd recommend it to anyone, young or old.”– Douglas A., age 17, England“Do Hard Things is the textbook for anyone who works with teens; it’s a philosophical and foundational must-read.”– Timothy Eldred, executive director of Christian Endeavor International

Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations by Alex & Brett Harris is a book for teenagers written by two teenagers. The message in this book is to rebel against society's low expectations for people in their teenage years. The way to do this is to "do hard things". Those hard things come from five categories, which include things that are outside of your comfort zone, things that go beyond what is expected or required, things that are too big to accomplish alone, things that don't earn an immediate pay off and things that challenge the cultural norm. This is meant to be a book that challenges the teen's psyche and inspires the reader to do things in the name of God to improve their world. Many people fail to push themselves and therefore fail to accomplish much of anything in their lives. By nipping this in the bud during the teenage years, a person could live a much more lively life. While this book is written for teenagers, I think just about anyone could glean some inspiration and motivation from it. The only two issues I have is that Catholics may find some offense in this book especially with how monks are depicted or imagined by the authors and the proselytizing without regard to one's personal safety.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion here is entirely my own.

I'm 37 years old and just finished this book. It's one of many that I have started over the last 16 months, but the only one I have finished.I was inspired to read the book after listening to an audio about a father who watched his son's love for baseball, be cut short as he tried out for the High School team and was cut. This sent the son on the "normal" teenage path of bad choices, friends who were bad influences, and ultimately a party that changed his son's life. The father came home from a family outing that the young man, who was 14 at the time, decided not to go on. What he found once he got home, was the remains and evidence of what had been a wild party. With fire in his eyes, and not knowing what to do, he chased his son to his room, bent him over his knee and spanked him. Further discussion came with the price of not knowing what further consequences would be, but for the immediate future, he was grounded. Shortly after this experience, the father came across this book. The new consequence would be, his son could be ungrounded once he read the book and wrote a report about what he had learned from the book, not just a report about what the book was about. The young man has since started his own free enterprise business, leads others in the fight of free enterprise education, and continues to grow and inspire others his own age and is only 18.My oldest son is now 14 and he excels in school. He should only be in 8th grade, but is dual enrolled in both High School and College as a freshman, taking a handful of sophomore classes. He also has his own business as a subcontractor doing miscellaneous jobs to earn money. Because school comes so easy for him, he doesn't push himself to his limits or full potential. His spare time and all of his money is drowned in video games and he knows everything there is to know about the Zelda Universe. He recently asked my wife and I if he could skip a couple days of school to buy the newest game system and the newest Zelda game that came out the same day. Neither of us liked the idea, but we also knew how hard he had worked to save up the money to achieve his goal. At that point I made a deal with him. He could have the 2 days off of school if he agreed to read this book and write a 2 page report of what he learned from the book.I gave him this challenge a month ago, 02/02/17. My wife, in her infinite wisdom, 2 weeks later, challenged me too read and finish the book before he did. She thought it would be a good idea for me to be able to discuss what I'd learned from the book with him once we were both done reading it. He finished late last night, I finished this morning 03/01/17. I look forward to reading his report and discussing my goals and the hard things I plan on accomplishing this year. My hard things include significant weight loss, tripling my income, and taking my entire family (I'm a sole provider of a family of 9) on a 2 week long tropical getaway. 2017 will be my best year!

My 13yo dd grabbed this up before my 15yo ds could (I bought it for him), and she has been challenging herself to make and keep routines, be more helpful, and even wants to start a non-profit helping the homeless now! She has all kinds of great ideas. I haven't read the book yet myself, but just judging by her response, I am impressed!

This is a book that can change every teenagers life. The message that God has a plan for your life and it starts now, not when you turn 21, is so inspirational to a young person who wants more. This message can plant a seed in your heart that grows into a deep belief that God has bigger ,greater plans for you when you trust Him.

They say some good things in this book, but I wasn't looking for the sole reason to do something "hard" is for God. I am not taking away the value of doing something for God or believing, but I feel that pushing the connection with God could have been in another book. I didn't understand the authors background ahead of time - my fault. This is not a book my children will connect to. It would be great for a church youth group though.

I bought this book for my daughter and granddaughter. It is written by two homeschooling brothers who discovered a secret most teens are missing-that they are capable of doing way more than we give them credit for! A must read for all youth groups and middle to high school kids! Our daughter is a high school sophomore and read this and gave her class a book talk on it-very important stuff here. Makes a wonderful gift for teens, especially those who are leaders.

Purchased this book for my 15 year old son for Christmas. He doesn’t “love” to read but we make it a priority as a family. He came to me yesterday and said “mom this book is a page turner!” He is inspired, motivated, and has enjoyed reading. I would highly recommend!

We read this in our youth group and it's an incredible read! Really inspired many of our youth and transformed their lives! We bought theses two copies for our kids as a summer reading project. They are really enjoying their read of them! Incredible for teens to help them believe they can do way more than society expects of them!
