Jonathan Katz is a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, and director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center. He has published over 100 articles on cryptography, and serves as an editor of the Journal of Cryptology, the premier journal of the field. Prof. Katz has been invited to give introductory lectures on cryptography for audiences in academia, industry, and government, as well as an on-line cryptography course through Coursera. Yehuda Lindell is a professor of computer science at Bar-Ilan University. He has published more than 90 articles on cryptography and four books, and has considerable industry experience in deploying cryptographic schemes. This is a serious introduction book. I enjoyed Katz's course on Coursera.Note this is theoretical. If you are looking for material on hardware or physical attacks like side channel attacks or fault injection attacks, you will need to look elsewhere. With that said, it is useful as a reference even after you have digested the material because Katz is very particular with rigor, notation, and word choice -- the result of a mathematician who cares about communication.

As a student enrolled in a Computer Security course and considering a career in Cybersecurity Engineering, I am finding the theoretical content of this book to be useful so far. Unfortunately, as a Linux user this ebook is more difficult to access than most others, as it is NOT COMPATIBLE with the Kindle Cloud Reader nor my Kindle device. I suspect my rating would increase if this product was made compatible with those devices, but I will continue reading this book on my smartphone screen.

Awesome book on a tough subject.

I have not finished the book yet, but from material I went so far and from Jonathan Katz's course on Cryptography I think I can describe authors way of providing information. I would characterize it in two keywords: rigorous and complete. Other materials I have met were maybe more lively but this one is is the best if you are really serious about crypto. It will give all the details you need to understand and work with modern cryptographic primitives. I will teach how to prove or disprove properties of various cryptographic schemes.

A rigorous treatment based on clear assumptions and proofs derived from those assumptions. Mastering the topic is not easy, but Katz's writing is clear.

SECOND-FIDDLE HUSBANDS The traditional notion of the male breadwinner has been turned upside down as American women in larger numbers are now bringing home substantial paychecks, while a lot of younger men are treading water or worse. Some women on strong careers path seek out similarly accomplished men, but others are looking for something else—a second-fiddle husband. This new kind of husband understands that with someone else holding the economic reins, he will need to take on more of the traditional home and child-rearing responsibilities that were previously carried out by women. Women have always had a lot of power in marital relationships, but that power has not typically flowed from education, career, and money. Now it increasingly does. Women are more educated than ever before, with women college graduates outnumbering men by a ratio of 60 percent to 40 percent. It’s predicted that by 2023 females will outnumber male graduates by almost half. Just as many Mad Men–era men preferred less ambitious women, it’s to be expected that there are women who now feel the same way. Historically, men were often in a bind. If they were not successful at work, they were not successful at home. As the nature of work has been changing from factory and strength-related jobs to growing numbers of jobs that require a lot of mental work, socialization, and patience, a lot of men have been falling behind. They are the ones who get into car crashes and hazing incidents, have drug overdoses, and wind up in jail. Even the run-of-the-mill guy is just not doing as well in the transition to the Information Age. 1.1: Female Breadwinners by Household Income, 1967–2010 Source: Center for American ProgressNow a second-fiddle husband can be a flop at work and still be a success at home as a loving, faithful husband. His life will no longer be measured by his salary or work title. For the men who enter a marriage with these new responsibilities and this new outlook, the second-fiddle-husband trend can be a godsend, freeing them from a life of work anxiety and failure. Both in the United States and abroad, the number of second-fiddle-husband marriages is on the rise. Work hours are increasing for two-worker families, and the increase is being driven almost entirely by women. The number of breadwinning wives is highest among the more educated and appears connected to the outpacing in education of American women over American men, which creates a smaller dating pool of successful men. Part of the rise of second-fiddle husbands is due to changing attitudes toward parenting and work and a more egalitarian outlook toward child care and career. Comfort with the idea of a woman being the primary breadwinner is especially prevalent among millennial men. A Pew Research Center study found the number of stay-at-home dads has doubled since 1989—from 1.1 million to 2.2 million in 2012. Unemployment was a factor in this, including the recession, but there’s also a long-term growth pattern for men as primary caregivers. In the same study, 21 percent of stay-at-home fathers reported staying home to care for their families, which is four times more than 1989, when that number was only 5 percent. Second-fiddle husbands are part of our pop culture narrative, too, as seen in Sex and the City’s Miranda and Steve (Miranda was a powerful lawyer and Steve worked at a bar) and the movie The Intern, in which Anne Hathaway is a successful CEO of an e-commerce start-up and her husband stays at home. However, these aren’t always the prettiest depictions. In both instances the husbands cheat on the wives, and the wives blame themselves and their “workaholic” tendencies. Expect that trope to change with the ascent of the second fiddles. There are generally two categories of second-fiddle-husband marriages. The first is by choice: the husband and wife have decided, often as a key tenet of their partnership, that the wife will be the primary earner in the family. The other is by circumstance, such as a medical issue or a layoff. The couples that choose this arrangement rather than being forced into it are, typically, far more successful. A 2014 Money survey reported in Time magazine found that households in which women earn as much as men were just as in love and a tad happier than the average household. The survey found that 83 percent of the second-fiddle-husband households were very or extremely happy compared to 77 percent for the rest. And they found that in these households there was no shortage of romance—in fact 51 percent called said that their relationships were “very good” or “hot” compared to 43 percent of spouses overall. A 2012 study published by the American Sociological Association on more egalitarian marriages found that both “husbands and wives in couples with more traditional housework arrangements report higher sexual frequency,” suggesting these marriages are mostly win-win arrangements. The not-by-choice second-fiddle marriages don’t fare nearly as well. These men are second fiddle by default. Fifty-eight percent of stay-at-home fathers reported that they were actively looking for employment, as opposed to only 27 percent of stay-at-home mothers. It is unclear whether this is because they want to earn more or because they were looking for work so as not to feel emasculated. The same Pew Research Center study cited above found that 23 percent of these fathers polled were looking for jobs but couldn’t find them. The largest percentage of stay-at-home fathers, 35 percent, is due to illness or disability, which is a stark contrast to the 11 percent of mothers who stay at home due to injury. According to Byrne and Barling (2017), when wives outearn their husbands, it can sometimes create something the researchers call “status leakage,” aka “negative feelings about a husband’s lower status,” or even dissatisfaction with the relationship. Women more often feel negative feelings about their husbands’ lower status, and men more often feel emasculated when they’re put in this type of partnership involuntarily. According to Luscombe (2013), citing a Kate Ratliff paper, these types of pairings can incite competition and resentment. According to the paper, it was found that “men automatically interpret a partner’s success as their own failure” despite not being in competition. In Bertrand et al. (2013), it was found that there was a general aversion among those surveyed to a situation where a wife outearns her husband. This “aversion also impacts marriage formation, the wife’s labor force participation, the wife’s income conditional on working, marriage satisfaction, likelihood of divorce, and the division of home production.” But this hasn’t deterred women from pursuing degrees and advanced degrees in record numbers. Countries such as Greece and Spain, hit badly by the economic crisis in 2008, saw a rise in female breadwinners. As women become more economically powerful in the U.S. and abroad, more may simply avoid getting married and having children altogether unless there are enough potential second-fiddle husbands to meet the demand. This is already occurring in South Korea and could escalate significantly in the U.S. In Japan, matchmakers are pairing men with poorer women because successful, educated women who would have to drop out of the workforce to stay at home are rejecting that traditional choice. While there have been a lot of policies geared to helping women stay at home, policies for second-fiddle husbands are generally weak and often the butt of jokes. Second-fiddle-husband arrangements also affect economic factors like lifestyle and purchasing habits, as well as money management. South Korea also doesn’t support progressive work policies, like flexible hours, which would allow South Korean women to have children and strong careers. Paid maternity leave with job protection didn’t even exist in the country until 2001. Second-fiddle-husband arrangements are found to be less successful in countries where the woman-as-caregiver model is traditionally strongest, as is the case in South Korea. All of these trends mean that South Korea could be in for a rude awakening. The key to being a successful second-fiddle husband is not letting the benefits of being number two on the earnings chart turn into resentment and loathing, but to instead to use it as a springboard to more happiness and a stronger partnership. Second-fiddle husbands may never become the majority. However, as women continue to become more educated and move up the career ladder, they will frequently be first-fiddle wives—and will need their own support networks and frameworks. These first-fiddle wives will need access to child care, investment counseling, and divorce protection. The alternative is that a lot of these women who are excelling will simply pass up on marriage and children altogether, joining the ranks of the never married, and that would be a great loss for men and women today, as well as for future generations.

His creative analysis of the sub atomic trends within trends that describe all individuals, explains his remarkable success in analyzing behavior to the clients who have benefitted from his creative number crunching. Suddenly mere mortals like me have a primer on the mathematics that predict how we’ll think, buy and vote. Who knew that dreary numbers and scary could be as entertaining as Mark makes them?

Microtrends is an easy read, delivering small sections of interesting, thought-provoking information. Although, reading the book in 2016 while seeing references to MySpace being the top social media site (among other outdated cultural references) makes you cringe a little bit. It provides a new perspective, though, on some of the 82 mictrotrends to see how they’ve “turned out” ten years later. The author provides enough examples to really get you thinking about how you view the world and the small things that are going on around you. The small influences that are about to explode could be right in front of you, you just have to view the world a bit more critically to see them. I would recommend this book.

"Microtrends" is very informative. It looks at the beginnings of new trends by looking at some which may initially only show up in 1% of population samples. The reason 1% is used is because with populations so large, 1% can be a very large number, especially with the flattening of the world, where even isolated minorities can connect so easily via the Internet, etc and generate critical masses. The author, Mark Penn, is a polling expert and relates that numbers will almost always take you where you want to go if you know how to read them. The book is an easy read with about 3 -4 pages for each of the 75 'microtrends' covered. All were interesting, but a few caught my eye.1. Sex-Ratio Singles. Because the percentage of single women is increasing and historians have documented that a society with too many unattached men leads to war, will a society with too many unattached women lead to peace?2. Number Junkies. Americans love numbers, but not arithmetic. Despite the popularity of TV shows like 'CSI' and 'Numb3rs' and movies like 'Good Will Hunting', 'A Beautiful Mind' and 'The Da Vinci Code', Harvard last year only had 77 math majors out of 6700 undergraduates.3. Eurostars. Since European couples are having less kids and since only and oldest children tend to be highly motivated, perfectionists and inclined to leadership, Europe's youth will be an especially talented group. The author notes that every US astronaut was an oldest child.4. Aspiring Snipers. In a small poll of CA youths, 1% looked to be snipers in ten years. Sure, this could be troublesome, but since snipers, besides being so talented, are more needed in urban situations in war and is a more moral way to kill than bombing, since bombing kills so many innocent victims. Previously, one would have expected more youths to aspire to be military pilots. Perhaps video games caused the change. There is much to think about, here.5. Protestant Hispanics. Which country sends the most Protestants to the US? Mexico. Interesting!

I am confused as to why this book received such a high rating. The pages are chucked full of old cliches and spelling errors. The same metaphors are used over and over again to the point where the book becomes predictable 1/4th of the way through. The speaker did not seemed credible and seemed a lot younger than the way in which she was trying to portray herself to be. I'm extremly disappointed in this purchase and I would advise anyone over the age of 14 not to purchase this.

I did enjoy the book. I wish you had more details on it. Honestly thought I was buying a story book but it was very thin and was all poems. I loved it but wasn't what I expected

On the outside the book looks af if it's about to take you on a beautiful journey. The titel is amazing, and I was really looking forward to reading it. Sadly it doesn't live up to that. It starts in a clumsy way, there are more than a handful spelling errors through out the book, and frankly, the poetry in itself is really repetitive, cliché and most of it, feels really "Empty".It is obvious that the writer is young, and not experienced. It is merely a stepping stone.I would not recomend it.

This book is good for if you're not into the mood of reading something too extensive. Some poems I loved, but some where rather cliche and reminded me much of myself when I was a young teen. However, I see the point because in the description it claims to written by a 14 year old. I still find that hard to believe because they seem so "woke" for their age, but I guess I have to go in faith on this.

Highlighting the fact that this is written by a girl a few years younger that me, i felt very relatable to every single poem. It was very raw, emotional, and clever. I LOVED this book! This is a must read for teens!Be careful, this book is very cool yet extremely short, if you don't like short books then this is not the one to have!

Honestly very beautiful. Full of meaningful poems that anyone who has ever loved someone, been heart broken, longed for someone, or just been generally sad or happy.

Caroline Kaufman's twitter handle is @itspoeticpoison, but her verse is anything but poisonous.I would give this slim volume - which I have read slowly, rereading many pages - I would give it ten stars if GR had them to give. The words are that beautiful, that haunting, that healing.I know firsthand the cathartic power of writing. To pour something unwanted out of yourself into words. To leave it there, on the page, and walk away. Free, or at least freer than before. These poems progress, each one a little closer to understanding. To wholeness and peace. The result is a satisfying, though emotional, journey.I won't compare Kaufman to other poets. There is no comparison. She's written what only she could write. (Who can ask a writer for more than that?) Light Filters In is wholly original. I suspect many, many young people have found and will find comfort and companionship in these poems. The imagery and language, the movement and beauty, and the emotions so elegantly conveyed herein moved me to compassion.I will keep this one handy on my Kindle, so that I can return to it again and again.

an incredibly unique collection of poems that any reader can relate. the book delivers powerful messages about self-love and acceptance, equality, and the journey of life. it has a thoughtful and creative structure that tells a story as the reader progresses through the book.

I found the story within these poems captivating, reminiscent of many teenage girl's struggles with identity, self love, and facing inner and outer demons. The author's voice is well beyond her years as she articulates dark subject matter very well! Perhaps my favorite poem in this collection is the one with the analogy of yarn and pink and blue, so powerful and cleverly written!

This collection was everything I wanted it to be and more. I was able to resonate with so many of the poems, and they took me from fond memories to heart-wrenching pain. I can’t wait to read more of Caroline’s work.

A truly amazing collection of poetry! I don't have very many other words then that. This is the modern poetry we all need.

This is truly an amazing read by an author who captures depression in an authentic, raw light. Her words move you, resonate with you and heal you all at the same time. True talent at its finest is the only worthy explanation of this novel. The best book I ever read, hands down.
