From Publishers Weekly

Created in the style of 2007's Dog, this compact photographic book showcases as many varieties of cats as it does interactive components. Tabs enable playful motion: on the cover, a gray cat dips his paw into a fish bowl; inside, a Bengal swats at a ball of yarn and a swishing slinky cat tail twitches. Other cats are pictured next to descriptive titles: a fluffy aristocat sits on a tuffet while a nice cat dozes next to a parrot. A scraggly cat features a furry cutout, while a hairless, scary cat (a Sphynx) lives up to its moniker. The final panels offer portraits of the cast of characters, with their names and breeds. The lively diversity of felines makes this as appropriate on a coffee table as in a playroom. Ages 2–up. (Feb.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From School Library Journal

PreS—Van Fleet follows up the popular Tails (Harcourt, 2003) and Dog (S & S, 2007) with this interactive novelty book aimed at toddlers but photographed for cat lovers. Stanton has captured an impressive array of expressions on his subjects: a cheeky Himalayan sticking out its tongue, a regally bored Bengal, a gentle Kurilian Bobtail asleep beside a parrot. The text consists of simple rhymes designed to describe different types of cats and what they do. Sue Stainton's I Love Cats (Harper Collins, 2007) and Patricia Hubbell's I Like Cats (North-South, 2003) are just a couple of similar titles that come to mind. The inclusion of furry tails to pat, flaps to lift, and tabs to pull is designed to engage young readers, although it will probably just lead to damaged books. The photographs are engaging enough and should continue to hold attention after the novelty wears off. I had four new babies to buy for in a short space and came across these beautiful books. I ended up buying two of each-one dog book, one cat book - for each child. These are beautifully done- I will never forget the sixty something Grandmas PORING over them at a baby shower and the other Grandmas impatiently waiting their turn. The books are nice enough to give as a shower gift and were really appreciated by the new Mamas among all the usual clothes and baby blankets. As for the actual kids who will "read" them,, these are sturdy, well made books with gorgeous photos and something happens- a texture, a sound, a pull-out- on every page. As the adult who will read them to the child, some of the pages are quite funny-when you end up reading them multiple times you will appreciate this. As with all pop-up books, these should probably be read to the child as there are moving parts but compared to a lot of this genre, they are very sturdy and should last quite a while. The animals are actual pets and are named on the last page. Classy and fun and gorgeous to look at! The above applies to the Dog book as well.

My son received the "MOO" book for his 1st birthday and loved it to pieces - three pieces, to be exact. I have taped that thing back together too many times! I was looking online to buy it again when I saw the CAT book. We have a Siamese that looks just like the mischievous fellow on the cover. My son went bonkers when I handed it to him. The book is very well made, pictures are of live cats in action, not drawings, and the pages are thick. Our only issue is that the pull tabs that make the cat's paw move, kitten pop out of the boot, etc., are delicate and the moving cat parts aren't behind cellophane. This book is definitely made for a child that understands books are delicate. My son is 2 so we supervise while enjoying this book and keep it tucked away during rough housing.

We love this book and "Dog." My daughter is somewhat obsessed with both animal species right now, so I hopped on amazon to find a good book of photographs. This is that plus so much more. It's wonderfully interactive and the text is clever and cute. We're looking into the others in series, as this is a regular read in our household.

My 20 month old son loves cats and this book has been a huge hit with him since we purchased it months back. Great, sturdy book with lots of fun pull and push surprise pieces that are still intact!

I bought this book as part of a gift for my daughter. She is very into animals and from time to time will fixate on one. So, I decided to get her a few books about cats. These are great for a little reader. My daughter is captivated by the pictures and she also enjoys having the story read to her. You can't go wrong buying books for kids.

At 10 months my daughter became fascinated with our house cat but he wouldn't sit around long enough for her to poke at him so we decided to get her the next best thing -- textured books! Having purchased 3 books from the Touch & Feel line, we wanted to expand her library and found this one. As an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. At my daughter's age, she loved seeing all the different types of cats but was too overzealous with some of the interactive pages! The "swishing twitching cat tail" now has a giant piece of duct tape mended over. My daughter also loves the squeaky ball but she doesn't have the finger dexterity yet to push it herself. The last page is absolutely adorable featuring all the cats shown in the book with their names. I can see my daughter at age 2 trying to remember each & every one's name!!

My toddler LOVES cats and so I knew I had to get this book for her. It was an instant hit, and she loves everything about this book. From the pictures of real cats on each page (in my experience kids are more attracted to real life pictures as opposed to drawn pictures of animals) to the fact that there's something to do on each page---push a squeaky ball, pull out a section, push in a section, this book is just plain fun. The text has a great cadence to it and my little one has started to memorize this book already. I plan on buying DOG next. This book was more expensive than your typical board book but well worth the money!

My 19 month old loves cats so we got her this book. She looks at this book at least three times a day. Her cousin ripped off the cats tail so this book may not be good for kids who are rough with books. Anyway, cute book. A little heavy for little hands.

Katherine Bouton follows up her bestselling book Shouting Won't Help with this insightful read about everything related to hearing loss. The book first caught my eye because I learned that the author had mentioned my blog LipreadingMom.com. After reading throughout the afternoon, I found myself nodding and saying "I didn't know that" due to Bouton's well-researched and thought-provoking insight. Of course, my children had to tap my shoulder repeatedly to get my attention to look up from the book! The most interesting portion for me personally concerned if and how to disclose hearing loss to prospective employers. I am a proponent of disclosing such information to employers, and the book tackles this sensitive topic by presenting the author's personal experiences in the workforce along with others'. Also compelling were the statistics about hearing loss and how it relates to education, employment, and income. Again, the author approaches this topic with adequate research and kept her opinions quiet. The research spoke for itself. The latter part of the book discusses why few people use hearing devices or even disclose their hearing loss. The common theme was fear...fear of what employers would think or what friends or even strangers would say. The other disheartening part is most insurance companies and Medicare do not pay for hearing aids, yet these entities will pay for cochlear implants. Why should someone who is not a candidate for a cochlear implant but could benefit from hearing aids not have affordable access to them? That is where Bouton wisely touched upon advocacy efforts with organizations, such as the Hearing Loss Association of America, working to provide more affordable access to hearing assistive products and services. For someone who is new to hearing loss or has lived with it for a number of years, such as myself, Living Better with Hearing Loss is well worth a read.

Excellent resource. This easy-to-understand book covers a broad range of hearing topics. It will educate you enough to know how to demand better value in products and service. Also, a good tool to better understand a friend's hearing loss.My conclusion is there are too many perceived choices on the market. Many brands by a few companies - the same inside. There are no sure and easy answers available. Much of the "magic" is the person who tests and fits the devices. Technology is advancing the level of help offered, but maybe not as fast as we'd like or need it to be.(Long-time user of BTE, molded-to-fit, and Lyric. After reading the book and doing more research, I bought two new BTE aids at Costco.)

Excellent book with loads of connection to websites, blogs and forums. Great explanation of technologies and comparisons. I truly enjoyed the personal touch of the author and could easily compare our experiences. I am being shoved out of a pretty good job by a very youthful supervisor who is intelligent but just doesn't understand my path in increasing hearing loss.

Great book. Parts of it make you laugh out loud. Must read by people with hearing loss as well as others so they can have a better understanding of what we experience, what are needs are and how we cope with our loss.

It’s mostly a book on facts about these things not a way to cope.

A must for anyone wanting to get a better understand of hearing loss for themselves or others. Well written and informative. A great help in my goal in becoming an advocate/volunteer/mentor for those new to hearing devices.

Very good reading - helps understand perspective of those with hearing loss.

Love the information it contains. Great read
