Review

“If Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings have inspired you to dig deeper into the intricacies of the nation’s highest court, look no further than a new book devoted to the subject… Kaplan writes in an engaging fashion throughout this detailed book…The Most Dangerous Branch couldn’t be better.”–Associated Press“Show[s] how the justices take and rule on cases that they have, in Kaplan’s view, no legitimate role in deciding, and on the basis of legal reasoning that only barely masks partisan goals.  The high-profile 5-to-4 opinions Kaplan highlights are deserving targets.”—The Washington Post“Persuasively argu(es) that the court has lost its bearings. . . engaging, gossipy and often highly critical. . . [Kaplan] takes readers through a scathing tour of recent Supreme Court decisions. . .  A passionately argued and credible indictment of the court.”–Publisher's Weekly“Describe(s) the behind the scenes dealing that led to the appointment of the sitting Supreme Court . . . Presented at a level of granularity with which you may not be familiar.  It makes for engaging, if not reassuring, reading.”  –NPR.org“Kaplan’s critique of judicial power will resonate with the court’s critics on both right and left.”’–The Wall Street Journal"Reminiscent of The Brethren…" —The National Law Journal“An informed discussion of a serious issue.”—Kirkus Reviews “An amazing amount of reporting about conversations and politics inside the Court” —Washington Free Beacon “Incredible.” —First Mondays podcast (in partnership with ScotusBlog)"A fascinating book."–CBS Morning News“A fascinating look at the Court during one of its most important, and divisive, eras... a perfect primer for helping Americans understand how members of the court came to justify their excessive involvement in various controversial issues"–The Christian Science Monitor “David Kaplan has an inquiring mind and a lively style. He also has some incredible sources inside the Court who have helped him open a window on the inner workings of the most opaque branch of our government. At a moment when the Court’s future hangs in the balance because of the retirement of Justice Kennedy, this book is important, even urgent (and it has plenty of dish, too).” –DANIEL OKRENT author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition   “This is a book for our times. As the Supreme Court has become a focus of elections, confirmation battles and partisan decisions, The Most Dangerous Branch tells the story, in a compelling way, of the “triumphalism” of the justices, both liberal and conservative. It warns against the increasing power of what was supposed to be the least dangerous branch—nine unelected judges who allocate to themselves decision-making authority over issues that should be left to the elected branches. Read it and start worrying. Then demand change.” –ALAN DERSHOWITZ Professor Emeritus at Harvard Law School and Author of The Case Against Impeaching Trump     “David Kaplan mixes the gifts of a colorful storyteller with the incisiveness of a first-class legal brief. Read this book for an original argument on a judicial power grab and to find out why Neil Gorsuch is ‘like an eight-year-old in a counter-revolutionary candy store.’” –JONATHAN ALTER author of The Center Holds: Obama and His Enemies     “Unafraid of the controversy he will certainly create, David Kaplan has written an important and provocative book about our nation’s least understood, and yet enormously powerful, branch of government. It’s a book that every citizen should read.” –DAVID BOIES Chairman, Boies Schiller Flexner and Author of Courting Justice     “With the voice of a gifted narrator and the insight of a relentless journalist, Kaplan lifts the veil on the Supreme Court. Through intimate portraits of the nine justices, explorations of their most consequential decisions, and a cinematic portrayal of the Court's central role in our politics, Kaplan makes a compelling case that the other branches have acquiesced to the Court’s power – and that the Court is indeed The Most Dangerous Branch.” –DANNY STRONG Co-creator of Empire; Screenwriter for Recount, Game Change, The Butler     “Kaplan spares the feelings of neither liberals nor conservatives in this provocative and timely account of how the Supreme Court evolved into something the founders wouldn’t recognize.” –H.W. BRANDS Jack S. Blanton Chair in History at the University of Texas at Austin, and author of Traitor to His Class and Reagan: The Life

The Republicans have controlled the Supreme Court for the past fifty years. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. There have been twenty-nine presidents since then but only nine have been Democrats. Of course, the Republican Party has changed a lot since the days of Lincoln. In recent years it has gone way to the right. The book is well written and researched. Kaplan had many interviews with the Justices and their law clerks as well as reviewed the archives. Kaplan provides an overview of the Court and the role between executive, legislative and judicial. Most of the book covers Justices and the Court of the past few years. He describes how Gorsuch has changed the Court and the retirement of Kennedy. The book is not unbiased even though Kaplan points out the failures of the liberal wing. Kaplan attempts to build a case that the Court has exceeded its role and the legislature has failed to do its job. I was surprised to discover that Kaplan discussed Kavanaugh as a potential to replace Kennedy and how that would affect the make-up of the Court. Kaplan is a journalist and the book is written in that style. It is very easy to read for a lay person. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and learning about the current Court. I had this book on preorder from Amazon and it was released and arrived on my iPad Kindle app on the first day of the Kavanaugh hearings. My, what timing! The book is 464 pages and I read it as an e-book.

This is a substantial analysis of essentially the Roberts Court (2005 to the present), although the author sometimes dips back into earlier history to discuss a point. It is divided into two parts: Characters and Cases. The author's primary thesis is that the Court has been too active in too many different areas and usurped the prerogatives of the other two branches, especially Congress, thereby imperiling American democracy. The heroes of the book are not any of the current justices particularly, but essentially the great scholars and judges of the past who argued for a more restrained Court. These individuals include Justices Holmes, Frankfurter and Brandeis, Learned Hand, as well as especially the late scholar Alexander Bickel (especially his "The Least Dangerous Branch").The individual portraits of the Justices enable the reader to appreciate their individual personalities and how they interact together. The author is critical of several of the Justices: Gorsuch, Roberts, and especially Kennedy who gets a lot of critical attention. This is because for many key years, Kennedy was the swing vote shifting back and forth between the conservative and liberal "flanks" of Justices. The author is unsparing in criticizing Kennedy for lustfully embracing opportunities to plunge into new areas such as the 1965 Voting Rights Act and gay marriage. I was surprised to see that the author has not jumped onto the Justice Ginsberg bandwagon, despite her positive reviews from the press and in other books. Scalia as well does not play a prominent role in the author's assessment. His evaluations of Breyer and Kagan are positive, seeing Breyer as focusing on the functioning of democratic government while Kagan is interested in doctrinaire arguments.Things get really interesting when the author discusses individual cases in the second part of the book. His chapter on the "Sleeping Giant" is a useful compact history of the major trends in the Court's history. The author's primary yardstick for evaluating cases if whether he believes the Court should even have taken them on for decision. For example, he is almost livid in attacking Roe v. Wade, which "snubbed" state legislatures and ever after has generated intense hostility toward the Court. The greatest self-inflicted wound is Bush v. Gore, where the Court ignored a controlling Congressional statute in order to rule the day. Next in line are the Heller second amendment decision, the 1965 Voting Rights Act case, Citizens United's take on the campaign finance laws, and the gay marriage decision. All these decisions, in the author's opinion, involved the Court rushing into areas where it really had no business or need to intervene. The Court has invaded these areas because it could, and there is no indication that the Court will not continue this undermining of democracy in the future. Obviously, some readers will surely disagree that some of these cases were ill-advised and unnecessary for decision. The epilogue is interesting for the author's observations about Roberts' role in the Obamacare decision and the revival of the Commerce Clause as a restraint on federal power. The narrative is supported by 42 pages of notes, a table of cases, and an index. Whether or not you agree with the author's overwhelming thesis, a reader will learn a good deal about the Court from this volume. It is especially gratifying for me to see Alex Bickel resume the spotlight (he died far too young in 1974), and perhaps he can once again sharpen our judgments about the Court.

The best part of this book is the intimate gossip that the author has accumulated over the years covering the Supreme Court. There are cute stories about justices and clerks, mostly emphasizing their human sides rather than their legal perspectives. The author sketches the details gracefully, although to my taste he goes too far in telling the reader what to think about the accounts; he rarely lets his subjects speak for themselves without his personal clarifications and comments.Unfortunately for the author, Justice Kennedy announced his retirement after my review copy was completed. There is a rushed discussion in the final chapter about what might happen if Kennedy retires, this may well be corrected and expanded by publication time. But unless there is substantial rewriting, the book will be out of date upon delivery. The title and subtitle of the book are misleading. Only in a partisan introduction does the author address the danger posed by the Supreme Court or accuse anyone of assaulting the Constitution. The section is not convincing as the author does not summarize competing views fairly, nor offer a coherent one of his own. Many of the decisions he likes were clearly activist, and many of the ones he opposes were deferential. He fails to distinguish between key civil liberties and cases that generate tweet storms in the culture wars, but aren't of high practical importance. His summary of history is superficial and romanticized, his current account colored by his political preferences. He dismisses major schools of Constitutional legal thought with brusque denials, and presents only the vaguest alternatives.Fortunately, this overheated op-ed rant is limited to the first dozen pages or so, and even that has a few good stories in it. Once the author switches from argument to illustration, the tone and style improve.Overall I recommend this book to readers interested in the day-to-day life of the Supreme Court justices, mainly in the Obama years. It's mildly entertaining to read. It won't give much insight into historical importance or legal theory, just the people who are making the history and theory.

Book in a nutshell1. Get on drugs2. Blame the pharmaceutical companies instead of yourself3. Ignore the many positive (more than negative) uses for pain killers4. Write a book to deflect personal responsibility5. Profit

This is a short book but is packed full of info never woven together so succinctly . There's plenty of links to proof docs and video for anyone to delve deeper. I hope this project does come out as a documentary to witness how Greed has corrupted our Govt through bribes from big ugly pharma. The filthy Nazi connections are startling but not surprising, as things do go with things such as the War on Drugs being a big fat lie. We live in a time when these truths can no longer be hidden. Thanks Judah for your determined way to bring this one out into public view.

An eye-opening look into the engineered opiate epidemic.

I actually ordered this book by accident. Since I am an avid reader of anything WWII and I saw the Hitler in the title and Auschwitz pic on the front cover, I thought it was a History book. In actuality it is a history book - about Opiates. I was intrigued so I read on. It is an easy read, I finished it in a couple of hours and it contains alot of information regarding the Opium trade and who is behind the epidemic. I wish it had more of a personal story from Judah himself who went thru an addiction, not much detail on that. Still it was an interesting book and I did learn alot. On page 92, He makes a reference to the Sackler Brothers, Raymond and Mortimer, and the way he described them I instantly thought of Trading Places movie with Eddie Murphy. Then he says the same thing i was thinking in the next line of the book but he says that "Richard Pryor movie Trading Places". Eddie Murphy ended up getting the role, Richard was unavailable, lol. A small mistake but one that could have been easily corrected with a fact check. Other than that, the information was great and I enjoyed the book.

another conspiracy theory. The evil star of Ishtar ?

Ive had 20+ friends dies from opioid overdose before age 35. I saw good people do evil things and they all say the same thing. It's not me, opioids ruined my life. It's true. The pharmacy wants you hooked. Doctor keeps ppl on these for years. This is not about blame game!!! It's about the cure!!! Ibogaine!! Yet it's ileagle in the US!!! Do you work for big pharma!? Perdue!? Dip your hand in the bear trap!!! Then talk about how great opioids are!¡ Yeah. If you're getting a limb amputated. But 160 mg a dayx3 for life. ? You call me when you need a fix . Better yet...call a doctor

Scary, sickening and an absolute nightmare. This book exposes so many and so much more than John Q Public is willing to tackle. All I can say from here is, been there, done that, know too many victims of this genocide. Thank you Judah, for confirming the cries of the victims. This epidemic is money driven, supported and it's too bad so sad if you or yours fall prey.

Great, quick read. Discusses some very real and scary things going on in our world right now. Many people in our society choose to ignore the facts; the realization of the level of corruption and greed in the world can be a disheartening reality, but it is one I think we should all enlighten ourselves to. I recently chose to read this book as I was completing the MAT training required for NPs to offer medication assisted treatment to patients with “opioid use disorders” with medications such as buprenorphine. As I was working my way through the training, I wanted some more info on this whole opiod epidemic, and this was a great, quick read to get some good information. I didn’t feel like I was being pressured to feel any certain way at all. I just felt like I was given some good info on the topics and some very important things to think about. I have been too busy to read lately, but this book had me hooked. I read it with my spouse, and he really enjoyed it as well. Would be a great documentary. I hope that happens, so this message can spread. Rather than consider this book “blaming”, I would say it is shedding light on components of the opioid epidemic which need to be shouted from the rooftops.

I really enjoyed reading about this time in history that we don’t hear a lot about. Interesting facts amidst the fiction that is brought to life in seven unique ways. Most of these authors were new to me and I enjoyed reading the different view points and writing styles. I enjoyed each novella but I must say Journey of the Heart by Johnnie Alexander was my favorite as I love reading about the Underground Railroad when it is well done. Charity Sinclair was an impressive heroine and her strength in her beliefs is an example for everyone. Well done and believable. Pressing On by Rose Allen McCauley is enlightening about the Separatists and their beliefs and lifestyle. The Bridge Between Us by Sherri Wilson Johnson has mystery woven into the romance . A great story of forgiveness. Return to Sweetwater Cove by Christina Miller is heartwarming and brought tears to my eyes. Digging for Love by Ramona K. Cecil shows how misconceptions about social classes and judging someone by their nationality causes harm when hearts are involved. Wedding of the Waters by Rita Gerlach shows that love knows no boundaries. Charlotte risks everything to attend to her first love. The Love Of a Child by Lauralee Bliss has you falling for the children. All in all this is an enjoyable collection that provides quick reads that you can read each in one setting. Don’t pass this one up.I received a complimentary copy. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

You can feel the surge of excitement around the building of the canal and the changes it brought to the area and the people. The Erie Canal was dug, by hand, across Upstate New York state and Ohio in the early 1800s. It brought a lot of people together, in many ways, because of the way it was made and the communities it went through. These 7 stories are an interesting and diverse look at the people whose lives were impacted by it. I live close to part of the canal, so it makes it a little more personal to me. Of course my favorite one is about the Irishman who worked digging the canal, my second favorite about the German village, since my heritage is both Irish and German. All the stories include interesting historical information about this vast area and the early days of the canal. It's easy to become thoroughly engrossed in each story. They're written with great depth. You can easily envision the characters and feel as keenly as they do what they are going through. Never a boring moment! Each also has a message of deep Christian faith which I feel competes any story.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

I enjoyed reading about the building on the Erie Canal during the different stages of development. Also I enjoyed reading about the different towns the canal went through and how it brought goods to their town and how they were able to travel by water way. Reading this reminds me of the trip I took last Summer to Cumberland, Maryland to visit the Cumberland Visitor Center which houses the C&O Canal National Historical Park. Inside the museum are many pictures of digging the canal and water travel. I was absolutely fascinated and could fully enjoy this book more because of the visuals I had while reading it. I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction looking to learn something.Publish date March 1,2019.I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Books through NetGalley. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.

Sweet, clean stories written by seven great authors. I love the area and the historical settings. I love all the various series of these collections. I enjoy the Christian themes. There is even a bit of suspense and action along with the romance, of course! It's very easy to be able to recommend this book to you!I received an ebook copy from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

The Erie Canal theme is underused in fiction, and what a shame, because it's rich in history and storylines. I'm so glad for the Erie Brides Canal Collection because the stories feature settings between Ohio and Upstate New York, the two places I've lived. This novella series features seven stories by seven Christian authors you will want to read more of. The stories are clean, sweet, and full of everything a good romance should: conflict and love. The stories blend well, and each one made me feel like I was transported in time.If you're looking for a historical Christian romance, I highly recommend The Erie Canal Brides Collection.I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

If you like good, clean christian fiction, you will love this book. All of the stories are very well written and are by different authors. This book has action, suspense and romance. All the stories are different and set at different times along the Erie Canal. Thank you Barbour Books via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion and I highly recommend this book.

The Erie Canal Brides Collection includes seven novellas. The stories are varied in social status, culture and location, but they share the commonality of the Erie Canal. All by different authors and all entertaining. This collection is a fun read for fans of historical romance fiction. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

A delightful book! These authors brought the Erie Canal to life in these stories. The new to me authors I now want to read more of their writings. I recommend this book to my friends.

One of the most difficult things to do when writing a sequel is to keep the reader guessing what is going to happen next. This book certainly succeeds in doing that. It also succeeds in providing a perfect final chapter. I'd say more, but I don't want to get into the realm of spoilers. One thing I do want to recommend is that if you haven't already read The Call, do that first. You need some introduction into this world, to enjoy it the most.

I wanted to love this book just as I loved "The Call" but unfortunately, for me, it just did not hit the mark. It felt as though the story was rushed to an end and I found it to lack the vivid descriptions and character development that "The Call" contained. It was an easy read that my middle schooler could have breezed through and yet I found it hard to continue to pick the book up. I read "The Call" in about 3 days but this one took almost 4 weeks due to a lack of interest on my part.

Wow! This book was even better then “The Call”. I listened to the audio version which was a huge bonus as some of the names are difficult to imagine the pronunciation. The narrator is truly talented and really brings the characters to life. Fair warning though, this story is not for the faint hearted. The author’s imagination can be quite challenging to those who are squeamish about gory details. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its worth the read but I thought the ending could have been better and faster paced. I'm glad I got it but I won't be telling anyone that they need to read it.

Love both of the books in "The Call" series. I initially listened to this on audiobook but loved it so much, I wanted hardback copies for my library!

I enjoyed this book more than the first, which was also great. I felt the characters grew up and developed more fully in this book. The world of the Sidhe is described in magnificent (and horrific) detail, reminding me a bit of the monsters of Neil Gaiman. The author’s unique imaginations and use of Irish lore make this a refreshing new addition to the dystopian society genre.

This series is an amazing exercise in horror, tension, and the highlights of the grim determination of humanity towards survival.

A wonderfully written story, that had me on the edge of my seat. I look forward to seeing more of his books!

I have been a lover of mystery books and intelligence gathering almost since I learned to read. As both a literature buff and history buff, delving into the evolution of intelligence gathering (coupled with the ever-expanding technology) became almost a "must". The book is well balanced, delving into the different modalities and technology used in intelligence gathering coding, decoding, and transmission. It also features brief vignettes on particular spies who were superlative in their vocation as well as some who were not so spectacular, and some who just had amusing (or irritating) idiosynchracies that gave a smile now and then.It is, first and last, a HISTORY book -- and anyone who reads much history knows that it is very densely packed, and very slow reading. However the information one gleans about how technological advances which are not only applied to "improvement in living ease" but also in ever-more-difficult spying techniques will long be remembered.Taking the transmission of intelligence from private courier to telephone, to "Marconi wireless" to various kinds of wireless technology and "bugs" all had both strong and weak points which needed to be addressed.I gave it 4-stars because the reading is so dense and moves so slowly, and in order to follow one chain of events, other developments not used in this primary endeavor must be backtracked and introduced at a later time, so it does not lend itself to a strict chronlogy, but you find you are taking mini-backtracks exploring other methods as well. All in all, it is a very good book, but a book to be read a little bit at a time, so that there is time to "digest" it. Three Cheers to Jeffrey Richelson, who had the patience to untangle it, and present a masterful book!!

I found this book very informative on the evolution of spies. However, post cold war, this book is sparse and rather curt in it's analysis which comes to an abrupt halt during the Clinton Administration. The book ends at about the 70% marker, with an additional 30% (100 pages) of references and citations. 434 pages for the book, 534 pages in all. I recommend it if you are interested in intelligence up to and during the cold war era.. but there is really nothing insightful after the 90's.

Quite a good book.

This book was more like a text book that would be read on a college level. Like many books that we all dealt with in college it was interesting and boring throughout. I will not read it again as I do some books after a long period. Of course this is all IMHO.

I am an avid reader of history, and especially of intelligence, spying, and military history. There are few books that I have started which I have not read to completion, but this was one of them. After about 150 pages, I realized that I wasn't enjoying the book, I wasn't learning much from it, and that I wasn't in a college course, so I could just stop reading. My criticisms, in no particular order:* While Kindles seem plagued by typos, this book sets a new standard. The errors actually begin to distract from the work, although they do provide some comedy relief. My favorite- a chapter that chronicles that famous WWI event, "The Battle of the Mame". I think it was a Lucille Ball movie.* A good portion of the book is a recitation of names, dates, places and events. Some of these are important, some should be footnotes to the footnotes.* Much of the information presented is devoid of any context. As an example, one section of the book describes in detail the intelligence efforts behind the Battle of Jutland. These efforts, however, make little sense unless you have a fairly detailed appreciation of the naval tactics and geographical context of Jutland. I suspect few readers have such details committed to memory, and must, like me, resort to an external source for background material.* The author makes sweeping statements, but does not back them up. For example, Richelson credits the Nazi intelligence services with a good portion of the credit for allowing Hitler's early successes in the Rhineland, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Probably true to some extent, but certainly an opinion that requires some argument and facts to support it.* In other cases, Richelson seems shy about taking a position. Richard Sorge, a Soviet spy, provided Stalin with information that was likely the reason that the Soviets were able to concentrate the vast majority of their armies against the Germans. Without too much imagination, you could make a case that this was one of the turning points in the European Theater. While Sorge's story is told, there is but brief mention of the consequences. So in summary I found the work to be mostly a collection of facts, with some opinions thrown in but not particularly well supported. As a narrative, it falls short as well, glancing over events whose details are truly interesting and important.I'd say skip it.

For a story about international spying, the book was incredibly dry. The information was interesting, and thoroughly researched, but so far as just-for-fun reading, it's a bit of a slog.

Found this to be well written and enjoyable to read, but man, a lot of info. He does a good job covering a lot of info.

I couldnt wait to read it since im interested in this. i thought it was a great book. i cant wait to read the next one.
