First, this book is not meant to be entertaining, but to bring to light an intense problem in both Chassidic communities as well as the rest of humanity. Sexual abuse of children is a topic that has been shoved in every dark corner that can be found. The author did a good job in dealing with the denial in the Chassidic community even today. She is trying to bring hope to those that have suffered from abuse themselves or a loved one who has suffered. If you are not familiar with the Jewish culture and Yiddish terms I suggest you read the glossary at the end of the book first as the author uses these terms throughout the story. I was familiar enough with the terms having worked for a Jewish newspaper for years to be able to understand what was being said. Without that understanding you will miss the essence of what is being told.This is a dark story full of hurt and suffering. A lack of understanding, in a child's mind, of what happened is key to the story. The culture of the ultra orthodox Chassidic Jews is brought to understanding in the book. However, I don't feel it talked at all about the fulfillment received from living this life. It talked more about the life of women in this culture and their role in "reproducing" as biblically directed in the scriptures. Woman are to stay in the background, never the forefront, which makes this sexual abuse in children even more tragic. But, the men too, are in such denial, fearing the repercussions of acknowledging the abuse and dealing with it. They feel it is sinful to even admit it happens. Therefore many children, male and female, suffer needlessly.I just want the potential reader to be aware of the depth of hurt, pain and suffering that is brought to light in this book. I believe the author is trying to bring hope to those that live in the dark world of abuse. I pray it does help in some way.
Wonderful book, kept my attention and I finished it in 2 days. I live in a culturally mixed community with Hasidic Jewish families so some of the terminology was familiar to me. There is a glossary in the back some reviewers missed ,when they said they were lost with phrases they didn't understand.There is so much shame in abuse, I knew a young woman growing up that had a brother abuse her and no one wanted to deal with it. Even when she was older and got help, the denial was still there. I think of her often, more so reading this book.Shame and pride keeps many people and religions from doing the right thing and the more cloistered a community, the more insular a group or family, the harder it is. The cries from voices reaching out the last decade or so, books like this, groups that are trying to help, I pray it gets better.I recognized many of the rituals described in her book with the Orthodox community, but I also was good friends with many families, our children even playing with each other (until 13 or so when they were stricter) for many years. Many of the women would tell me how hard it was, especially outside of their neighborhoods, "cheating" with Internet, newspapers, etc., questioning rules that were never altered. They also loved many things, same as any other religion. They also mentioned that domestic violence was another subject not spoken of but that occurred in silence. I liked how the author didn't condemn, she told about her experiences but didn't judge others.I still have Devory haunt my thoughts, but in a good way.
I found this story slow moving at first, almost childlike but then it is narrated by Gittel, a young Chassidic girl and punctuated with letters to her dead friend Devory. The portrayal of Chassidic life in New York was shocking to me even though I am of the Jewish faith. These Chassidish children were very insulated and lived in a world dominated by the Torah. They really had no idea what the rest of the world was about. It's as though they wore blinkers. The fact that they were taught to stay away from gentiles and felt superior to them bothered me greatly. I take pride in being Jewish because it is a humane religion. In this story it seemed that fallowing the letter of the law was more important than being a caring human being. Kathy, the Catholic neighbor was a better role model than Gittel's parents. The most disturbing thing about this story was the fact that incidents like rape were totally ignored and covered up. The families were more concerned with their reputations than the terrible events that took place.
