PROS:Thorough, yet brief and easily understandable explanations of the core concepts.Written in language closely aligned with the CLEP exam (ie: teaches to the test).Appropriately challenging sample questions provide strong preparation tool for the exam.Many sample questions with detailed/step-by-step explanations.CONS:ALARMING NUMBER OF TYPOS! Typos in a widely circulated publication are bad enough, but in a math exam prep text they are especially egregious. Nearly all of them are notation mistakes where a minus sign or the like is missing, or a problem's solution states a slightly different question than that which was asked. It is very confusing. I'm sorely disappointed in REA for their lack of attention to detail in this text. Their other guides are stronger than this.With the typos in mind, and the brief explanations, I can only recommend this text as a final preparation tool for the CLEP after having already learned and practiced the material elsewhere. It is best used as an orientation to the style of calculus problems the CLEP will contain. The CLEP questions are quite different than other Calculus 1 study tools, so this text is very helpful in that regard.This text IS NOT to be used for learning the material! Far too many mistakes and not enough detail.
I had used the Chemistry CLEP book to pass my exam. For the Chemistry version I knew from other reviewers and a variety of online forums that it was covered in mistakes. The overall tone of those sources for this book was better. But, oh boy, were they wrong!!! This book is dreadful. There are consistently missing equal signs or signs in general which makes this book awfully confusing. You need a good core understanding of calculus in order to understand this book and not get thoroughly confused and scared. Some of these mistakes could have easily been avoided if someone would have proofread this book properly. Especially inconsistencies between question and the restatement of the question in the answer key should have been easily noticed. On the other hand some answers are completely wrong. As a last resort I plugged in their examples into Wolfram Alpha to see how I could be so wrong on some of the problems. Only to have Wolfram Alpha tell me the exact answer that I got all along. Maybe the editors should use that tool too. It is free after all, unlike this book.If all of that wasn't frustrating enough. The quick and easy access code to the online practice exams is not so quick and easy after all. I submitted my code, payed the $1.99 additional cost to use it and the promised "within minutes" has so far turned to "within days". Very infuriating if you are using this book for a quick refresher just before an already scheduled exam.After being disappointed by REA twice know, I will keep my fingers away from their material!!!
Thanks to this book and its included practice tests, I passed and got credit for the CLEP exam!I was fairly confident before I bought the book, but bought this book just incase. I am very glad I did as I ended up failing the practice test by a small margin.After some practice and reviewing with this book I was able to pass the CLEP easily.Advice: DO THE ONLINE TESTS. Take them several times until you understand every question.They are very important and look a lot like questions you will see on the CLEP
So of course the online code in my book didn't work...I ended up paying an extra $10 to access the online content...The book is intended to be used as a refresher by someone who has already had a calculus course, and it would be effective if it weren't for all of the errors. There are lots of little typo mistakes, such as signs being reversed cos functions changing to sec functions and other silly typos. I have spent a lot of time chasing my own tail when working through this book just because I assume the math in the book is all correct....It isn't...maybe try a schaumb's outline instead
This book saved my behind with the CLEP test. I'd argue that the CLEP Calculus exam covers quite a few topics which aren't necessarily given a lot of time in a traditional Calculus class. This book (along with the online tests) were KEY to me passing the CLEP Calculus exam.Also, I'd recommend buying a new version for the online practice exams.
This is the only book out there. It should have more practice problems similar to the real test and info on the actual details of the test - like how to use the online calculator. With a strong AP calc class and this, I got a 58.
I purchased many of their other products. My son is using this to study for his CLEP. He said the book is helpful, but when we tore off the seam to access the online test code it was hard to pull off without pulling the code off. After some water and patience we got it off. Then when we entered the code into their online test site, it didn't recognize it. However, after 2 attempts the system noted that it may have been a mistake and they will inform the site manager of the incorrect number. The good thing was it still allowed my son to access his test. I took off 2 stars because of the test hiccup and the mishap with tearing off the gray tape to access the code. The last thing I wish it had was more examples and better explanations for answers.
