I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

The Heart Sutra is the essence of the Perfection of Wisdom class of sutras, which represent the "Second Turning of the Wheel of Dharma". That is to say, the second main set of teachings by the Buddha. The First Turning was on the Four Noble Truths. The Third Turning was on Buddha Nature. But the Second Turning was on the nature of reality, emptiness -- in other words, the important stuff!This is a hard literature, crystalized in the Heart Sutra, which is only a few pages but very dense (versions of it are available on-line). Here the Dalai Lama provides an excellent commentary on this difficult text by placing it within its entire Buddhist context. The result is that one is led step by step to the deepest understanding of this sutra, which is really the most profound element of the Buddha's teaching. Remarkably, then, this book can be grasped by the beginning student as well as much more experienced students. A crucial element in Buddhism is familiarization: going back over something again and again until it is understood very deeply, and then realized personally through meditation. ***SPOLER ALERT*** This is the first book that I didn't find any amusing situations that made me laugh. The book does not read as though it was written by the same author as the previous books. This book reads and feels different. The language, syntax, everything just felt off. I noticed a FTA name and several other names reused, which seemed odd to me. Her apt was safe, no blown up cars, funeral viewings or help from Grandma. Was she on vacation during this book? The interaction with Grandma and The Plums is always enjoyable. So tired of the Joe and Ranger fight. Enough already, pick one and move on. Joe never buys her things, yet she always turns to Ranger for cars, help with a FTA and to hide out. But, she is supposed to be engaged to be engaged with Joe. She never has bullets for her gun and is usually kidnapped by someone. After 25 books, she has grown very little. Stephanie and Lula are like part of the three stooges, it was funny for a while, and now has become boring and stale. My final Plum novel.

You know, I do like Stephanie and her friends, but I have to say the last 2 books are not near as good as the first 23. This book was humorous, but didn't have any of the laugh out loud parts like in the previous books. I used to get at least 2 good belly laughs out of each book, but not from the last two. I would love more of Grandma Mazur in the books. I am kind of bored with the Stephanie, Joe and Ranger triangle. Stephanie is old enough to make a man decision! Personally, I think she should get together with Ranger! Joe is kind of boring and taking advantage of Ranger, he wants Ranger to protect Stephanie, but not have anything personal going on between Stephanie and Ranger! Ranger really has a soft spot for Stephanie and, I hate to say it , but she uses him, she keeps getting cars and help from him and just seems kind of 'Ranger will fix it all, and pick up my FTAs and let me have the money'. This book was amusing, but at he same time kind of ho hum!

Although this is the 25th book in a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone. At least if was a fun read for me. The bad news? I’m going to have to shell out quite a few bucks for the first 25.I feel as though Stephanie Plum and Lula are neighbors of mine here in North Dakota. They feel like friends my wife and I have.BLUSH FACTOR: There is some trash talk, but, for the most part, nothing too severe. However, there are eff-words – precisely two, if it matters to you. The first is found on page 155 and the second on page 285. Honestly, though, I would not like to see anybody pass this book by simply for these two slips of the tongue. This is THAT fun and engaging.CHARACTER: All of the central characters are well-drawn, and with just enough quirks to keep them authentic and interesting.POV: First person.EXCERPT:This excerpt is provided so readers can get a feel for the writing and their quirky behaviors.'... “Maybe we can help you,” Lula said.“What are you thinking about?”“Killing myself.”“There’s lots of decisions associated with that,” Lula said. “I assume you’re gonna shoot yourself in the head.”“Yeah,” Kulicki said.“Well, your head will most likely explode and make a big mess when you shoot yourself, so best to do it in the bathroom or kitchen. And then are you going to leave a note? And you’ll probably poop your pants so you gotta decide if boxers are the best choice or do you want to be wearing something more sturdy?”“Mostly I was just thinking if I should do it,” Kulicki said.“I’d advise against it,” Lula said. “It’s not something you can change your mind on after you do it. And suppose the bullet doesn’t go in exactly right and you turn yourself into an unsightly vegetable?”Kulicki nodded. “That’s a concern.”“You bet your [expletive deleted],” Lula said. “Why do you want to kill yourself?”“To begin with, I’m going to jail.”“It might not be so bad,” Lula said. “I know lots of people in jail, and they’re doing okay. Besides, you could get off with community service or something. You don’t know for sure if you’ll get jail time.”“Even if I don’t go to jail my life is ruined. All because of some stupid fries.”“You got shorted at the drive-thru window, right?” Lula said.“Yes. So, I went inside and asked for the manager.”“And there was no manager, right?” Lula said.“Right! And then some green-haired imbecile with a nose ring who was behind the counter told me I was fat and didn’t need more fries.”“I had that same thing happen to me,” Lula said. “I hate that place.”“So, I was still polite,” Kulicki said. “I told him he was rude and his comments were unprofessional and inappropriate.”“You exhibited excellent self-control,” Lula said. “I told him he smelled like cucumber and cat pee, and…’Evanovich, Janet. This series seems to have lost its mojo. What used to be hilarious has become tedious. Number 25 is not funny and that was the thing that I loved about this series. There were always laughs to be had - big belly laughs while I was reading in bed at night. Not anymore apparently. I suspect that the last two books - 24 and 25 - were ghost written. The continuity in some of the characters has changed. Lula is called fat twice and "large" once. Everyone knows that when Lula is called fat she goes crazy on the person making the remark. Not so in this book. She only gets mildly irritated when called a large woman. She doesn't even react when called fat twice. Now that's just not Lula. And, since book 24, Stephanie - who rarely uses obscenities - is using the world "dick" and other colorful phrases. Now, I don't object to cursing in books, I'm no prude. But, it's usually the characters around Stephanie who are using colorful language rather than Stephanie herself. There has been a definite increase in obscenities from all characters starting with book 24 and continuing with 25. Perhaps in an attempt to make the series seem edgier? And, how long is Stephanie going to vacillate between Ranger and Morelli? The decades long teasing of her bouncing back and forth between these two men has gotten stale. The whole book feels stale. The plot does pick up the pace about 60% into the story, but the laughs are nowhere to be found. Sigh. This is not what I expect from Evanovich. Really, what happened to this series???

This is one of the worst book yet! If her work keeps this quality i will not be buying any more
