In hindsight (especially after reading this book) it’s an interesting observation to note that best practice architecture for business intelligence has remained constant for more than 20 years – especially in a field that changes daily. Implicit approaches are accepted as gospel without challenge or consideration.Business Unintelligence takes the reader on a thought provoking ride and challenges these assumptions by reviewing the historic aspects in business intelligence – why the architectures has developed in this way and more importantly why they are no longer valid. As one of the founding ‘fathers’ of Data Warehousing Architecture (and probably one of the most underappreciated contributors to the space) Dr Devlin is in a perfect position to the review short comings of business intelligence at an enterprise level the (albeit officially unrecognised but often discussed). Barry doesn’t shy away from the issues talked about in corporate corridors – he tackles them head on!
Good book, bad printing. Kind of faded odd greyish printing makes this look like a fake book of some sort, don't knw why this is like that. The content however is great.

Devlin's book is a tour de force of the data warehouse and business intelligence landscape. It drills into every nook and cranny of the industry, the great successes as well as the depths of insanity (and there's plenty of both revealed). This book details what the true 'Father of Data Warehousing' thinks of his children and its not always pretty (hence UNintelligence). But what I like most is the humor and continuous history lessons -- both human and technology history lessons. Devlin keeps the book from being the common dry technical tedium that causes readers to abandon many IT books. The quotes and references combined with his humor keep the brain entertained while discussing complex subjects in ways we mortals can understand. I especially like chapter 5 on architectures, data warehouses, and "Business Intelligence -- Really?" He reveals both the greatness of analytic solutions while he challenges the UNintelligence of many people and concepts. Its a must read, especially if you have less than 10 years in the BI/DW business. I have 20+ years in this market and found myself enjoying the book. Now, excuse me, but I have to go finish chapter 9. Its worth the cash -- snagged mine at a BI/DW conference.
I've always appreciated, and indeed benefited from, Barry's deep insight and instincts, and when reading this book I've become intimately aware of the depth and breadth of experience that underpins those insights. Being an avid historian and a big believer that we need to know where we came from in order to know where we are going, I believe this book gives you everything you could ask for. It starts with the birth of data and brings us on the tumultuous journey to where we are today. It's an ambitious book which successfully combines a theoretical foundation, with technical specifics, business application, and the social layer, all wrapped up in light humor to keep you coming back to what otherwise could be a challenging read. I've thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it for anyone looking for a broad foundation that will help them put business analytics, or "big data", into perspective.
