About the Author
HIDEHARU ONUMA was the 15th-generation headmaster of the Heki Ryu Sekka-ha school of archery and kyudo banshi, 9th dan. He was born in Tokyo in 1910 into a highly respected archery family. Onuma sensei, who was instrumental in introducing kyudo to the West, believed that kyudo belonged not just to the Japanese but to the whole world. Until his death in 1990 he made regular trips abroad to demonstrate and teach his art.DAN and JACKIE DEPROSPERO left the United States for Japan in 1981, intending to stay for one year. Shortly after their arrival they met Hideharu Onuma and began their study of kyudo. Later their relationship with Onuma sensei deepened when they moved into an apartment above the family archery equipment shop. In 1988 Dan DeProspero passed his examination for kyudo renshi (instructor's license). The following year he was promoted to 6th dan. The "Kyudo: The Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery" is one of those rare books that discuss a martial art that is truly useful in all aspects of the subject matter. Kyudo is relatively obscure in the US, likely because of the few qualified teachers and locations to obtain competent instruction. The bows, arrows, and associated personal equipment is expensive; you cannot really apply other potentially related skills to the art; and it is, technically, rather complicated. Alot of "moving parts", so to speak. Many years ago a friend gave me a Japanese Yumi bow. For years after that, until the heat and humidity of where I live finally led to it's demise, I would take it out once every couple weeks and "shoot some arrows". Notwithstanding the "form" and the "art", neat bow! Tricky to shoot accurately, and you have to have really long arrows to achieve the proper draw length. Well... I replaced the old Yumi with a new, fiberglass version. Having a somewhat extensive relationship with the "martial arts" during the last 40 years, and now being retired, I decided to learn everything I could about Japanese archery, and gain some proficiency. I can say that properly used, with the proper gloves and arrows, the Yumi is extremely accurate, and while seldom used for hunting, etc., the bow can easily outperform the traditional English Longbow, and give a modern compound bow a "run for it's money" under many conditions (and I have both types...). The "Yumi" has been around for 1500+ years, and other than construction techniques is the same bow used by the Samurai during the classic periods in Japanese history. After replacing the old Yumi, I decided to "get serious". During my search for more information, I spoke with the co-author, Mr. Dan DeProspero; Dan is the premier Japanese trained and certified Kyudo instructor in the US. He referred me to this book, but left it alone for me to determine the value of the book. Regardless of any other factor, if you either have a Yumi, or are interested in the Yumi, unless you have some reasonable access to a Kyudo instructor, or "dojo", in order to safely (both for you and in order to not damage the bow...) to shoot the Yumi, you absolutely need this book. Pictures and diagrams!!!! Extensive!!! I thought I knew how to shoot the Yumi, LOL!!! Believe me, unless you can see the detailed instructions, diagrams, and explanations, you will never do it with any technical competency. In addition, unless you know how to string the bow, hold the bow, release the arrow, etc., you can damage a rather expensive piece of equipment. The book serves as a detailed instructional manual that addresses the basics, and also provides the basis, ethics and goals of the modern Kyudo as a traditional sport. The book, of course, does not replace the substantive requirement for a qualified teacher; but in the absence of a "dojo" or teacher within a reasonable travel distance, can serve as the starting point. Warning!!! Don't read the book one time, then buy a Yumi and head out to shoot!! This is one of those books that you will want to read repeatedly, going over several pages at a time, practicing the skill, and then start again reading it. I've read it twice already, and have read certain basic sections numerous times just to learn how to hold the bow!!! In each and every instance, simply following the clear instructions (and diagrams...) in the book my "competency" in just consistently shooting an arrow with a reasonable accuracy vastly improved. The more you read, the more you practice, the more you will understand why the "art" of Kyudo is a truly an art. It will take many years of practice to "get real good" as we sometimes say. At some point in the Kyudo journey, however, you will definitely need to "take a trip" to a qualified instructor or "dojo" where Kyudo is taught. A word on the "form" and the philosophy of Kyudo is in order. It is well covered in the book. If you are truly interested in learning the art, the book is a must for beginning to understand what is described as the "right mind". I can speak to the concept of "right mind" from my experiences with other martial arts. In order to master this art, the process must include a discussion and practical overview of the mind set as well as the nominal technical competencies, and the book covers the subject very well. Any "Cons"? Well.... If the average person thinks they can buy a bow, buy the book and do a quick read, and learn to shoot a Japanese bow in a couple weeks with some competency, then this book (or any other book for that matter...) is not for them. You either accept the fact that you will have to begin an education process, and consistently read and use the book for what it is intended, or be sadly disappointed... On the other hand, if you are serious, it will be more than well worth it for any beginner, if but for the technical aspects of how to shoot the bow. For the "practitioner", it's probably the best "one stop" source for review of the basics, analysis of techniques, problem solving, and general Kyudo guide. For those interested in Kyudo, read the book before you run out and buy a bow, etc. As a reference source for those interested in Japanese martial arts, the book is a must have for the bookshelf. It's truly a five star resource.
I don't know if this book is out-of-print but it was published in the 1990s as a $32 book. So, buyers, you may wish to look elsewhere. I paid $100 and, though I liked the book, I felt I paid too much.Moving on to the actual book review:This book does a very nice job of explaining Kyudo and it's various steps. It won't teach you Kyudo -- you need a teacher for that -- but it will help you to make sense of the details. The writing is clear and helpful, and it addresses a lot of questions about equipment, tradition and technique. It only makes a few, undetailed references to Kyudo-based ceremonies.
This is the first time I have had a chance to read about Kyudo. I was always amazed by it through movies and documentaries, but never had a chance to really learn about it. This book is very informative, I feel like I have a good understanding of the art and can now seek some formal training. Unfortunately, there are no schools that teach this art in my area, so my personal research will be the best I can do for now. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about this art and furthering their knowledge of the martial arts.

This a great book not only to further understand the spirit of kyudo but to improve one's technique. The foreword is very interesting and will immediately take you to the essence of what kyudo really is. In the afterword, the levels of practice are explained in detailed which will help you understand how the path of kyudo can help you become a more peaceful person.
Purchased as a gift. He enjoyed the history. He is a martial artist, archer and on his goal towards his 3rd Black Belt. TKD, KungFu & Hapkido. Desire to study more on Asian Archery.
Excellent book. Would liked to have seen more on the equipment manufacture, but overall a very handy reference and handbook for those wanting to know about kyudo.
