That large amounts of data are being collected about ourselves and our lives is hardly new. All our digital financial transactions are collected, our telephone calls (if not their content,) are collected, so are our driving patterns, and so much more. How this affects our lives is possibly something we are now alert to, until we get the call from our bank querying ‘unusual purchases’ of large quantities of make-up and running shoes. What is startling about this book though, is the rigour and sophistication with which retailers are gathering data on our private and public lives. It would be absurd to suggest that this gathering of data and turning it into information is evil: we want our credit card company to know when our credit is being used in ways that are unlike us, or the driving pattern of our car does not match our driving style. Similarly, it is useful to know of specials that would interest us, or that products we have been using are being replaced by something better. The second chapter of this thoroughly researched book covers the evolution of retail. Little has changed in the principles of successful retailing, though much has changed in how these principles are applied. The salesman who travelled through the village or between farms had to comply with the same basic principles as does the modern retailer. You must know your customer, buy your wares well, sell your wares well, and maintain your customer base while growing it.The travelling salesman had to know the villagers’ interest in the products he had to offer: he had to buy these goods at prices that would allow him to cover their cost and to make a profit. He had to know his customers well enough to be sure of whom to offer credit to, and who not. He had to maintain his wares so that they were attractive, and present them to customers so that they would be desirable.Without external rating systems, he either had to insist on immediate payment or to be able to extend credit, make the assessment of the buyer’s financial strength. With the advancement of the retail system and the growth of retailers, stores began to develop their own credit systems, offered only to financially strong families. Wares were able to be advertised in newspapers and pamphlets, and their quality began to be assured through brands. More goods were available on display, giving the shoppers a better view of what they were being sold.As towns and cities grew, retailers could grow too. Competition became keener and the elements of retail needed to be addressed differently. The purchasing power of retailers lay in quantity, and the attracting, knowing and keeping customers became more difficult. In the absence of the sophisticated technologies we have today, various ingenious methods were employed to keep track of what was sold and to whom. One of the most enduring methods was the voucher. There was the discount incentive to buy the goods, and a method of knowing if the discount-offer changed behaviour. Vouchers offered a way of knowing at which outlet the goods were being bought, and so on. It was a time-consuming process and a clumsy one, but one of the best on offer. Technological advances made the basic idea of vouchers much more cost-effective and powerful. In the forefront of the sophistication of retailing was Walmart. It was Walmart that embraced technology in its quest for ever-increasing efficiencies, with an eagerness never seen before. Launched in 1962 by Sam Walton, the chain grew systematically from its first store in Rogers, Arkansas. One of the reason for Walmart’s success was its obsessive focus on cost-control throughout its supply chain, which resulted in Walmart growing to a point where few other retailers could buy in larger volumes and at lower prices. Through its size, Walmart could cease buying from wholesalers, and buy only from manufacturers. Their computer systems at the time were reputed to be larger than the Pentagon’s. Their use of barcoded boxes of goods, not only goods themselves, made for ever-greater efficiencies and controls of their processes.Today, pervasive technological advances can enable stores to identify loyal customers. The value of these customers is deemed to be high, because the store doesn’t need to attract them, only retain them.Perhaps the most powerful piece of technology available to the retailer since the advent of the super-powerful computer, is the ubiquitous cell-phone. This always-on, always at-hand device, offers benefits so necessary for the growth of retail stores today. When each store had only a few customers it was the duty of store serving staff to know their customers, what they liked, and how valuable they could be. Today, in a supermarket or clothing chain that would be impossible. On entering a clothing store your cell-phone can identify you, your picture can be sent to a store manager who can then greet you by name, and guide you to the new range you have looked at carefully on your home computer. If you commented on how good a friend looked in that new-cut suit on Facebook, you could be guided to one on the rack.Similarly, having purchased locally made pasta on each of your last visits, you could receive a discount voucher to try the imported Italian version. As technology advances, ever more opportunities to entice, reward, and promote are available to retailers to get a greater share of your spend.Do shelves have eyes, staring at you? Of course. Does everything you interact with in the internet-of -things have this capability too? Of course. The value of this book lies in its comprehensive and insightful overview of the evolution of retailing, and its intriguing expose of the sophistication and use of advanced technologies today. And yes, you will be surprised at how everything is looking at you.Readability Light ---+- SeriousInsights High -+--- LowPractical High ---+- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of the recently released Executive Update.

As a technology entrepreneur and attorney in the world of beacon technology and proximity marketing for local retailing, I am consistently searching for well written authoritative books, articles and blogs on the topic. Tremendous growth in this area is a forgone conclusion, for instance, most of the high powered forecasters of the world are predicting that beacon use in the US, will jump from about 7 million in service at the end of 2016, to over 400 million by 2020. I am sad to say, however, that there are very few really good publications on the topic (believe me I have looked). In this Dr. Turow’s “The Aisles Have Eyes” stands out as one of, if not the best book on the subject as it relates to the retail environment. The book has the most valuable information on latest developments on what some of the larger retailers and information gatherers are doing today with derived tracking inputs, and it puts this in historical context, based on the evolution of merchant retailing (this I found particularly enriching, as, if you know “where you have been” it’s much easier to envision where things might be going). For a non-technical book, it does a good job of relaying the most up to date technologies recently piloted and deployed by the most advanced retailers (this in itself, to me is worth the price). Also, in addition to a well-researched and clear account of where things are now for the largest “data miners,” (outside firms and retailing empires), Dr. Turow does an excellent job of laying out both the benefits and the downside to the consumer of this proximity tracking. In one respect (and the way I tend to look at it), on site, location based proximity marketing equips the small local merchant with the ultimate tools to survive “showrooming,” and the ever expanding online monopolies (not only from the Amazons of the world in direct sales competition, but the Googles, Facebooks, etc. that want to claim every advertising dollar), with the ability to promote a coupon or discount to an in-store (or passing by) shopper at the point of contact. The dark side though (which I have to admit I never really deeply thought about, until I read the book), is the ability to use this last piece of on-location data, match it with thousands of other bits of data, and, indeed, have such a complete profile that discriminatory pricing will be the norm (imagine, all items priced the way airlines price their wares, in subterfuge). In summary, if one has any interest at all in where location based proximity marketing (beacons, geo-fencing, camera identification) is today and where it is rapidly heading in the future, either as a retailer, a technology fan, or just as a conscientious consumer, this is a “must read” book, and in this is unique in the field.

This is an eye-opening and easy, must read for consumers, marketers, and privacy experts alike. Consumers need to know that almost everything we do in-stores and online is tracked by retailers (and others) in the name of providing us with better service, better prices, more convenience, personalization, discounts, coupons, etc. And, we need to better educate ourselves about what’s being done with all the data we share intentionally or without our knowledge. Yes, without our knowledge from our beloved smartphones! Marketers need to know that they are pushing boundaries and taking advantage of what consumers should know, but don’t. Books like this one help educate consumers and let retailers know that they may very well be going too far and that we are onto them. As an avid shopper (in-store and online) and former retail executive responsible for efforts and programs like some of the ones Turow describes, I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it. It was scary good!

Book was excellent and very scary.

Interesting subject some great things to think about and how the world knows everything you do and where you go. Sometimes quite dry and tedious.

Pretty rough read-very dry.

Excellent Book, highly recommended for any one in the IoT, Robotics or Retail .

This is a great book that gives a unique insight into data collection and the future of marketing

Amazon.com Review

This little gem of a book, newly issued with a foreword from the great Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh (who knew Merton in the 1960s) beautifully distills Merton's own reading and long experience with contemplation. Written close to the end of Merton's life, this book is not so much a "how to" guide as it is a kind of contemplation of contemplation. Immersed in the "negative theology" of St. John of the Cross and others--and influenced by his deep reading in Zen--Merton here stresses that in meditation "we should not look for a 'method' or 'system,' but cultivate an 'attitude,' an 'outlook': faith, openness, attention, reverence, expectation, supplication, trust, joy." God is found in the desert of surrender: this means giving up any expectation for a particular message and "waiting on the Word of God in silence," knowing that any answer will be "his silence itself suddenly, inexplicably revealing itself to him as a word of great power, full of the voice of God." --Doug Thorpe

If you've never read Merton, this is NOT a good place to start. If you want to know about HIM, his life choices, and general philosophy, Seven Story Mountain might be a better choice. But I read this book specifically to learn about his views on Christian mystical meditation and I loved it. He synthesizes sources from the most renowned Catholic mystic thinkers and does so brilliantly.A word---I read almost everything Merton says when it comes to Christ metaphorically. So I think it's important to say that this book isn't only for Christian seekers. As a Jew, a secularist, and an naturalist, I found Merton's discussion of meditation inspiring and brilliant. When you consider the way that Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and secular contemplatives all say the same things, almost verbatim! it warms the heart and makes me wonder why we ever fight wars over water and land when, if you go deep enough, we're all sustained by the same well.

In fact I could only really enjoy it when I found my long lost paperback version. For this kind of reading, that requires going back and trinking over what you have just read, maybe adding some notes on the margins... I still prefer paper.Since it was conceived as a short manual for monks, in the first place, Editors seem to have thought necessary to add a quite long prologue _in comparison to the book itself.

I go the e-book and audio book for this one. This book is a very good book on contemplative prayer from a Christian perspective and an introduction to the spiritual life of prayer and how to use prayer as connection to the divine. Even though this book is an excellent resource on Contemplative Prayer, it is someone clunky for the beginners in this area and has any theological and latin expressions. Most people think of prayer as a corporate thing that you just do to talk to God. This book helps one to understand that prayer is a tool not just for connecting to the divine but also to oneself and gives a nod to the comtemplative prayer of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern religions such as Buddhism. Prayer not as communication and making wishes but prayer to transform ourselves and unite with God.

This is harder work than many of his more popular works, perhaps because it’s aimed at the monastic rather than lay community. For the same reason, it is also a clearer and more phenomenological tract. As the stars indicate, I loved it.

A small book with a lot to say. It has been astonishing for me to find someone who has so much to say about a topic I’ve just discovered. It does seem a bit biased but it seems to me he had a particular audience in mind when he wrote this essay. I feel all of Christendom would benefit from a study of this work. I am a recent convert and was delighted to find Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating. They have helped me understand the nature of the calling I received at my moment of conversion. Like Paul on the road to Damascus I was not looking for or expecting a calling from Christ. Since it happened I have been attending many churches’ but not found a true home. However, I have found a place I like. Merton and Keating have shown me I do have a place and a part to play and have helped me to comprehend the message I received. I thank them.

I found this a helpful text in my own struggles with prayer, dread and the difficulties of spiritual life. Merton speaks from a place personal struggle. This is a text I imagine I will return to more than once.

Thomas Merton is one of the two or three best sources for understanding comtemplative prayer and its importance in one's spiritual journey.

Thomas Merton's thoughtful work on Contemplative Prayer is worthy of careful contemplation by Christians of all traditions. The chapters are brief as is the book but it contains many powerful ideas. Merton is careful to not separate contemplation from either corporate worship or service. He will have none of the false dichotomy of "spiritual" life and "earthly" life. He also avoids pointing to contemplation as a gimmick or a method for true spirituality. The highlight of the book for me came on page 112. There Merton writes, "Prayer does not blind us to the world, but it transforms our vision of the world, and makes us see it, all men and all the history of mankind, in the light of God."I come from a different Christian tradition than Thomas Merton, but I value his insights as I seek to walk the sometimes fearful, sometimes exhilirating, sometimes inscrutable path of prayer.

Review

"If you desire greater freedom and happiness in your life but haven't known how to find it, this book will be a trustworthy guide." --From the foreword by Bob Schuchts, Author of Be Healed "A simple and helpful understanding of the human person and the effects of sin and grace in the human heart. Anyone who embarks on this forty-day journey in faith can expect to be led by the Holy Spirit and grow in self-knowledge, healing, and with God's grace, freedom from sin." --Most Rev. Andrew Cozzens, Auxiliary Bishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis "Lenten Healing expands our concept of Lenten fasting from obligation to awakening. Through this approach to the Lenten disciplines of fasting and prayer, Ken Kniepmann offers readers an opportunity to deepen our vision of what it means to be free, whole, and loved by God." --Audrey Assad, Catholic singer, songwriter, and musician "I have no doubt that Lenten Healing will be of great help to people desiring freedom and restoration in Jesus Christ. The meditations are inspiring, deep, and healing. This book will lead you to encounter God's personal love for you and give you the courage to face and let go of what holds you back from living the abundant life in him." --Sr. Miriam James Heidland, S.O.L.T., Catholic speaker and author of Loved As I Am "If you are anything like me you have dealt with some type of repetitive sin or behavior, something you desired to be free from. Ken Kniepmann in Lenten Healing unpacks the roots of sin, the power of grace, and the reality of freedom we have in Christ. This is a devotional we should all journey through." --Paul George, Catholic speaker and author of Rethink Happiness "Ken Kniepmann does an amazing job of leading us on a guided Lenten retreat into the 'super-structure' of sin--the interior tangled web of past wounds and the complicated response of our hearts toward sin as a medication for all that mess--with illuminating force, accessing God's grace and healing all along the way!" --Jim Beckman, Executive director of evangelization and catechesis, Archdiocese of Oklahoma City "The integration of prayer, emotional healing, and growth in Christian virtue in Lenten Healing is both brilliant and profound. If you want freedom from the deeper places of your sin and from the hurts and wounds that drive sin, read this book and allow Jesus to heal you and set you free." --Rev. Mathias Thelen, S.T.L., Pastoral Administrator of St. Patrick Parish, Brighton, Michigan

If you have ever begun a Lenten discipline of scripture study or prayer, only to have it all fall flat after a few days, then Lenten Healing is the perfect book for you this coming Lent. Ken Kniepmann has prepared a wonderful and meaningful daily Lenten "retreat" that really does get to the heart of the renewal and transformation people seek during a Lenten Journey. The daily prayer and fasting reflections help to get to the root of all that keeps us from living as Christ desires. Once the root is discovered, the Holy Spirit leads you from sin and disorder to healing and renewal. Very grateful for this timely and well prepared resource!

The daily reflections are so deep, I feel like I need a full day retreat to allow the truths to sink in and the Holy Spirit to bring to light the wounds/lies/sins in my life. I think this will be a resource God will continue using well after Lent. There is a reflection for each day that leaves a lot of food for thought and prayer. The reflection is followed up by quotes from scripture and the saints. Ken the proposes some reflection questions that help guide your prayer for that day. And finally, he ends each chapter with a prayer that seals the experience.Another thing I appreciate is that while the daily reflections deal with sin in our lives and wounds in our lives, it carries a hopeful and triumphant tone... saturated with God's love and mercy while not sugar coating the need to fast from sin.It is so well done and clearly inspired by the Holy Spirit.

This book is another that simply made its way into my life. I have gone through the Lenten Journey time in the wilderness day by day and every day the Lord has met me and healed something in my life. Many times it was hidden and I did not even know I carried that hurt or that scar...but each one was exposed and gently, lovingly healed. To the authors: Thank you from the bottom of my heart !

This book is so helpful. This book helps to get at the root cause/wound in our lives. It also helped me to focus on asking God for all the healing I need and to ask for and be open to receive. Only thing I don't like is that it is listed as 'Lenten' and that's selling it short. It is for ALL YEAR. This was the best Lent for me thanks to this book and I will continue to use this book ALL YEAR ROUND.

A smaller book. Looks pretty intense. Day by day passages. Nice to ad to my collection.

awesome book to help examine what motivates my actions. I'm learning a lot about myself, and how to grow into the person I want to be.

It was a helpful reflection on sinfulness and growth toward a more holy life.

A terrific exploration of the connection between the emotions and the spiritual life.
