This is a very charming book, appropriate for children, and fun for adults, too. The author had a very idyllic childhood growing up in Cuba. They had a large house on a property outside of town, rather rural. Her descriptions of the fruit trees made me hungry! This is an easy read and both enjoyable and relaxing.

Having the privilege of studying with her at U.S.F. while studying for my doctorate, I eagerly awaited to read this latest collection of stories.It makes a huge difference when you actually know the author. I always marvel at her ability to relate her stories so others can relive them, too.Write on, Dr. Ada!

I've just started reading this book, but I already love it. There is a very useful glossary with Spanish/Cuban terms.

An easy read and it helped to set the stage for my 15 day trip through Cuba.

Alma Flor Ada’s ISLAND TREASURES: GROWING UP IN CUBA is actually three collections of personal essays in one volume. These three collections consist of WHEN THE FLAME TREES BLOOM; UNDER THE ROYAL PALMS, which was a Pura Belpre Medal winner; and DAYS AT QUINTA SIMONI. Those who know of Ada’s work have probably already read the first two collections, but the third is new to this volume.The personal essays in this collection average about seven pages each, making them quite readable, even on-the-go. As the title of this volume indicates, each one of the twenty-six essays tells something about Ada’s childhood and youth in Cuba. Readers can also look at family photos and enjoy illustrations by Antonio Matorell. Readers who know little to no Spanish can look up words and phrases in a glossary in the back matter.I found this book particularly interesting because I began studying Spanish in second grade and continued studying it up to my undergraduate major. Two of my Spanish teachers in the middle grades (fifth and sixth grade, then eighth grade) were from Cuba, and this put some light into what their life in Cuba might have been like.This book is marketed for young readers – about ages eight to twelve – and would be quite appropriate for that age group. The style is simple and conversational, as if she is sitting with readers telling the story. However, just like Sandra Cisneros’s THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, an older audience might appreciate this work more than youngsters would because the essays are very nostalgic.Who I am: I hold master’s degrees in library science and English and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish.How I obtained my copy of this book: From a friend.

Greatly enjoyed this cozy mystery in slightly exotic 1930s British colonial Ceylon and would love to have tea with Inspector Shanti de Silva and his charming English wife, Jane, in their home tucked in the lush highlands outside of Colombo. Fascinating investigation of the local British tea factory owner, a very nasty piece of work, on a shabby plantation with ill-used workers. Once this cruel owner is found dead, Shanti has to walk a fine line with both the man’s friend and his lawyer as he works to solve the murder. A mistreated and frightened wife, a mistreated and dismissed worker, a car chase in a Daimler through the thronged streets of Nuala—all these add to the puzzle amid long-ago local color. Another amusing touch to this delightful look at life in Ceylon is de Silva’s malapropisms, which his wife gently corrects (“a warning shot across the ship” is corrected to “across the bows, dear.”) With financial intrigue and worker issues to negotiate, and in spite of the interference of the assistant government agent, aptly named Clutterbuck, de Silva slowly and calmly ties everything together and I was left happily looking forward to the next two books in the series.

Inspector de Silva and his English wife Jane waited until they were in their forties to marry. Yes, they'd finally met the person they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with, but they were also old enough to know their own minds and not care about any raised eyebrows. Why the raised eyebrows? Because it is 1930s colonial Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and mixed marriages aren't quite the done thing. Shanti enjoys reading classics like Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe while Jane prefers Agatha Christie. Shanti loves the spicy foods of his native Ceylon and finds English food bland and heavy. Jane would never eat chilis for breakfast. These two main characters in Harriet Steel's Trouble in Nuala are fun to get to know-- and there's more.This book has a marvelous sense of time and place. Readers learn about a country under British colonial rule and the problems with which it must deal. Not only that, but the descriptions of the landscape and wildlife of Ceylon are vivid and help to bring the whole book to life. Two examples: farmers set off firecrackers to scare away wild elephants and prevent them from destroying crops, and then there are stunning scenes like "the startling lime-green splash of a paddy field where egrets stood like white question marks."Although the killer's identity isn't all that difficult to deduce, my appetite for the other books in this series will not be denied. The only real problem I have with Trouble in Nuala is that it's too short!

Bring from Sri Lanka, I may have approached this with some doubt in my mind. How well would a foreigner depict my country and its vibrant culture? Well, I did find a few questionable moments, but overall, I must say the book was quite satisfactory!My first query was - where exactly is Nuala? Some reviews mentioned Kandy, but that is incorrect as many people drive to and from Kandy in the story. I think it is Nuwara-Eliya, which is quite a mouthful to say, and hence quite understandably shortened to Nuala.If the author's descriptions are to be believed, not much has changed from the 1930's to present day Nuwara-Eliya. Hoppers / roti and hot sambol or curry for breakfast, slow trains, even the description of some of the stalls and the market in the town sounded familiar. The author has obviously researched Sri Lankan country life, and this could be seen in many places. For example, where she describes the needless killing of elephants by the British as a sport.I did find some details difficult to accept. The protagonist de Silva is a Sinhalese policeman from Colombo who was recently transferred to the hill country. However, he speaks Tamil quite fluently. Those who did receive an education during the Colonial era studied in English, while the native languages were not taught. One would learn it at home. So I found it difficult to believe that de Silva would be so conversant with what is basically the third language of the country. (Although it is accurate that Tamil is widely spoken in the tea estates since 50% of the population are of Indian origin.)The worst blunder in my opinion is the choice of name for the lawyer - Ravindra Tagore - really? Wasn't there any other name that could be used? Rabindranath Tagore immediately jumps to mind...My favourite aspect was de Silva's take on British culture. The little mental notes and comments that littered the text. I loved the way his wife kept correcting his usage of idiomatic speech - "a warning shot across the ship would be a better way of dealing with it - across the bows, dear"The mystery itself was not as complex as an Agatha Christie novel, but then very few authors reach that height! Overall, an enjoyable experience and a very cozy mystery.

Pleasant, well written cozy type police procedural with a couple of plot holes. I enjoyed the setting in particular though I had to suspend my disbelief significantly to think all were ok with British rule and mixed race marriages. It was almost too light for me considering de Silva's position. I'm sure life wasn't all cricket and tea for any policeman regardless of nationality at that time.I think I should stick to reading this series when I'm in the mood for something light and want to just go with the flow.

What a delightful change of pace. I really liked the characters and the location. It took place during a gentler time without all the cruelty and violence that defines far too much of the books we see being published now. There is more that enough violence surrounding us today without having our escape to the land of books filled with it. The story did not move at a fast pace, but I found myself steadily turning the pages to see what was around the corner. The author sprinkled just enough detail about the places and people that really helped you to form pictures in your mind. But at the same time did not overload the book with excessive detail as too many authors today have a tendency to do. I will look forward to reading more about de Silva.

Insight Guides generally contain so much information and history about a country or region, and this guide to South Korea is no exception. If you just want a guidebook that primarily lists hotels, restaurants, and shopping, then this is not the book for you. But if you want to really learn about the country before you go, then this is ideal. And the fact that the electronic version is included as a real bonus!

Excellent descriptions of places and generally gave a better overall description of different sights. It also gave hours of operation and times when English language tours were available which was very helpful. However, it did not generally give instructions on how to travel to a location, such as which subway or bus line.

Great background info on all the places I wanted to visit.It was worth carrying with me during my 2.5 week long trip.

I thought there would be a walking guide.

I wanted more info on Jeju-do. I’ll spend some time in Seoul but it doesn’t look like a place to spend time.

This looks very comprehensive and I am looking forward to using in next month in my travels in South Korea.

As a crochet fanatic, I wanted to learn more about the craft. I ordered this book because it summarizes everything that I needed to know.To my dismay, the book has some basic info and the pictures are really bad. Black and white, not clear. It is not very appealing and motivating.It is more a book of video links and website links. I kept it just for the filet crochet otherwise, I would have returned it.You can find most of this stuff on You tube with clear explanations and colors.If you are a beginner, I wouldn't recommend it. Buy instead the Leisure Art magazine: I can't believe I am crocheting!For info: the Kindle edition is in color with very good pictures however the paperback edition is pretty lousy.I finally decided to return it. To be honest, I was expected to receive 3 books as showed on the site but instead received this book.So if you willing to use it on digital form, go for it. I highly do not recommend the paperback version.

My girlfriend wanted to learn how to do crochets. She got this book and started practicing. After reading this book and more practice, she was able to make me a scarf and a couple of other items, like beanies and a coin purse for her niece. This book taught her everything that she needed to know to be able to make those items, from the most basic things to the more complex patterns.

This is a nice little book for beginners. The information is mostly available by logging onto websites listed in book. I would prefer to just read techniques in the actual book.

There is some useful knowledge for some of the projects I do and plan to do, but it was not quite as informative ass I thought it would be.

I have heard about crochet, but I never got a chance to learn it. I never expected a Kindle book on crochet. This book explains everything that we should know about crochet. You can easily learn the basic stitches and techniques used in the art of crochet in this book. This book also helps you to learn about the hooks and equipment you need to start out and all about yarn and its various uses and start some basic projects.

This box set will guide beginners on the basics of crochet. I haven't done anything yet, but I'm looking forward to making some stitches with the help of these books. This offers unlimited inspiration, with fun to crochet patterns, selection of styles, textures and color combinations. A brilliant book for those new to crochet, sure to make a range of beautiful projects. Nice!

This book has been really a big help on refreshing me on how to croceht, what I liked this is that it is not just for beginners but from beginners, to expert. Very comprehensive. He focuses heavily on the British forces (for obvious reasons) and doesn't think much of the French generalship (for even more obvious reasons). Ultimately, the "Dunkirk spirit," heavily mythologized by the "little ships" energized the British people. Winston Churchill was careful to say that "wars are not won by evacuations," but as this book shows, they can be lost if they fail.Most highly recommended for people who want to learn about what happened at Dunkirk

I learned a lot from this book. I was generally aware of what happened at Dunkirk but in quite general terms. This book goes into much detail about the fighting before the British had to fall back to Dunkirk. In fact too much detail for me and I suspect for most readers. There is a lot of very detailed discussion about which units were holding what area and who reinforced whom. It's a good resource for the serious researcher looking to understand the battle but I found it to be a bit tedious and I suspect a lot of other casual readers will also. Not to take anything from the author-just an observation. It was somewhat of a surprise to me that a few of the French units actually fought pretty well but their upper leadership was dismal. Of course many did not and left the British hanging at times. It was interesting that the French resented the British for not staying and fighting for them. It's a good work but it's not a casual read.

If anyone wants to learn in considerable detail about the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) from the time it went into France and Belgium until it was evacutated from Dunkirk, this is the book to read. The problem is however, is that with the exception of the last chapter, it is not well written or edited. The author uses considerable amount of jargon that perhaps a British WWII veteran would understand but which is Greek to everyone else. The book does have a glossary which is inadequate either because it omits items or the descriptions are inadequate. For example in the book types of artillery pieces are mentioned but no descriptions of the weapons are included in the Glossary. 18 pounders, 25 pounders, 60 pounders, and 2 pounders are mentioned but many readers do not have a clue as to what these artillery pieces are. Some pieces are described in inches which gives readers with a military background some idea what size the weapons are but since most of the world describes the size of weapons using milimeters (mm) it would be helpful if the milimeter size of the weapon was included (with the exception of infantry small arms . It would be even better if there were photographs or illustrations of the weapons.I knew what a Bren gun was (a shoulder fired light machine gun) because my platoon in Korea was right next to the Commonwealth Division and we often visited each others positions. But the description of the weapon in the Glossary would not be helpful to a reader who had not seem one previously.Dunkirk became familiar to me when I was young. When WWII broke out, I took a keen interest in what was happening in Europe, largely because WWI was still fresh in everyone’s mind. The evacuation at Dunkirk was widely covered in the newsreels and in the weekly magazines and the scenes are still vivid. Later, when I studied military history, we studied the campaign that ultimately lead to Dunkirk but not nearly in the detail that is covered in the book. I have some large maps from that course that were useful in following the narrative in the book. Although the book contains maps, the maps are too small to be readable even with a magnifying glass.When the movie about Dunkirk came out, I had a renewed interest, particularly because the movie only covered a small fraction of what happened, omitting anything about the courageous stand the BEF made in preventing the Germans overrunning Dunkirk. And for that matter, the French. So for me, the book filled in those large blanks. But while the book does devote about one and a half chapters to the actual embarkation and naval activities, much about the sea evacuation is omitted from the book.Nevertheless, despite its shortcomings, the book is a good read, even though a difficult one, and I recommend it.

This book was very well researched and had so much detail that it became hard to read. Granted it is a depressing book. The good guys lose every battle and finally retreat. Of course I knew this before I began the read. The details were so in depth that I could skim for pages and not lose track of the story line. I am glad I read the book for the sake of learning the history, but I am now reading D-Day that takes place in the same area but has a better ending and I am enjoying it much more. Maybe I just like good endings but who doesn't. I like to read to be uplifted not depressed. Again historically this is a great book, sometimes history is hard to read without a great story line.

Very interesting in parts but yet another historian who doesn't really understand the BEF's order of battle and equipment. Refers to 2 lbr guns as "37mm" (they were 40mm) and claims they were not that effective, when they were actually one of the best all round ATGs of 1940. They could pen any German tank at 500 yds, typical range for Europe. Head to head, when not grossly outnumbered, most BEF units held their own or repulsed German attacks. Only the fluid nature of the battle due to the French collapse caused them to be defeated at all. They were by far the most motorized, most professional, and most modern infantry divisions in 1940. Their artillery was top notch. History written by non war nerds often comes out like this. They get the general movements of troops, but their analysis comes up wanting. Only 3 or 4 of the British divisions in France were territorial rear echelon units. They did lack equipment. The rest were pretty powerful units. They were just constantly put in bad situations.
