This is an interesting book. I have read others years ago that make a similar effort--to recreate restaurant recipes. I recall reading of efforts to recreate, for instance, the Big Mac some years back. But this volume stands on its own pretty doggone well.The book begins by noting its approach--trying to reproduce recipes that people really like. The author, Ron Douglas, notes a benefit of this book--by providing recipes to readers, people can make their favorite dishes and save money in the process. I have eaten Fettuccine Alfredo at Olive Garden. The author notes that one would pay $11.95 for this at the restaurant, but only $4.28 if one makes it at home, quite a saving!The book opens with helpful cooking tips, with guidelines for buying veggies, and laying out how long one can hold on to herbs/spices before they go stale or bad. But it is the recipes that are at the heart of this book. For example, Applebee's Baby Back Ribs. Ingredients: Ribs, ketchup, cider vinegar, dark brown sugar, Worcestershire Sauce, liquid smoke, and salt. Why just list ingredients? To compare with other rib recipes in this volume! Hard Rock Cafe's BBQ Ribs ingredients: water, liquid smoke, St. Louis ribs, chicken broth, ketchup, maple syrup, pepper, yellow mustard, dark brown sugar, Worcestershire Sauce, bay leaf, white vinegar, and orange juice. Some similarities--but also some interesting differences.I make fried rice whenever I do a stir fry dinner. Benihana's recipe is different from mine. Many of the ingredients may be similar (e.g., mixed vegetables), but the process is different. I use the "Joy of Cooking" recipe--which is great! It calls for cooling the rice; the Benihana version does not. Thus, similar ingredients but a different process. That's part of the fun of looking at these recipes. Can I try something different and still come up with a good dish?I make a decent Pasta e fagioli, but when I had a business meeting at Olive Garden, I had to concede that their version was better. How nice to see that recipe listed in this book! Next time I make this dish? I'll use the reconstructed Olive Garden menu.And on it goes.In the end, this is a fun concept. It is not original; others have made the effort before. But the recipes are doable and promise to produce good results.
So far we've had the Hard Rock Cafe Baked Potato Soup and the Red Lobster Cheese Biscuits. I served the soup at a women's luncheon and everyone wanted the recipe. It is definitely the best potato soup I've ever had or made. The recipes are easy to follow and both items came out exactly as I would expect them. I highly recommend this book. If I were forced to leave some negative comment I guess it would be that they don't have the recipe for PF Chang's garlic noodles. Seriously, it is a terrific book. I gave three away for Christmas and everyone who received them is also raving. Good job!
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I was definitely not disappointed. I made the Lemon Cream Cake from the Olive Garden and it was a fabulous hit with the family on Easter. It is easy and absolutely delicious. I am so anxious to try several of the other recipes in the book. I received my order in just a few days and was extremely happy with Amazon. I look forward to the second volume to order in the summer. I would recommend this book to anyone. I gave a copy to all of my kids at Easter and they were thrilled.
I bought this book years back for our daughter. I went to copy a recipe from it and loved too many more of the recipes that I decided to order my own...which is very helpful seeing we live out of the country right not.
I bought this for me ! Showed it to my daughter and she kept it had to order another one for me !!
Well researched and well written and presented.Can't wait to try out all the recipes inside.Only thing is now I have to track down a pressure fryer in order to ensure its finger licking good. Next amazon purchase I think.Arrived earlier then expected which was also great.Wonderful addition to the very large collection of cooking books I have already.I first found out about this book from Oprah and I can now Highly recommended it.
Very nice cook book that can be used in an everyday household. So many cook books you have to go and find ingredients at the store to complete the recipe. This cook book isn't that way most everything can be found in your kitchen. I enjoy seeing how close to the taste the author Ron Douglas actually gets. This is a fun cookbook :0)
I love clone recipe books and this is a good one.
This is my second purchase of the book. The recipes are so good and my girlfriend is always asking me how did you prepare this, that I decided surprise her with her very own copy. I am pretty sure that very soon she will start getting compliments for the great dishes she will be making. The recipes are delicious and easy to make if you follow the instructions.
